What is the difference between Internship Cancer Survivor vs Oncology Research Assistant?
| Aspect | Internship Cancer Survivor | Oncology Research Assistant |

| Work Environment | Hospitals, cancer centers, support groups, nonprofit organizations | Laboratories, hospitals, research institutions |

Pediatric Psychologist
Open Rank, Full-Time Faculty Position
Department of Pediatrics, Emory University School of Medicine
Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta
The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and the Emory University Department of Pediatrics invites interested applicants for a faculty position (open rank) in the Section of Psychology within the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center is a national leader among childhood cancer, hematology, and bone marrow transplant programs. Aflac Psychology is a valued Section of the Center with 12 faculty psychologists and neuropsychologists, two psychometrists, up to three postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students who engage in patient care and clinical research in the areas of pediatric, adolescent, and young adult hematology, oncology, and bone marrow transplant. Preference will be given to candidates with related pediatric hematology/oncology experience and/or board certification (ABPP).
About the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center
The hired Pediatric Psychologist will join one of the strongest pediatric hematology/oncology programs in the country.
- Our oncology program cares for more than 500 new cancer cases per year. We represent the pediatric arm of Emory's NCI-designated Winship Cancer Center.
- We are home to one of the leading childhood cancer survivor programs in the country, providing survivor care to more than 2,200 pediatric cancer survivors. Founded in 2001, the multidisciplinary Cancer Survivor Program addresses the unique needs of childhood cancer and bone marrow transplant survivors who are at least two years off therapy.
- We have the largest pediatric hematology program in the country (including 2000 active patients with sickle cell disease) and one of the four largest pediatric oncology programs in the country.
- Our blood and marrow transplantation program performs an average of 80 transplants annually.
- Children's Healthcare of Atlanta-the only tertiary pediatric center in the dynamic metropolitan Atlanta area and in the state of Georgia-serves a population of nearly 6 million people, providing a strong basis for clinical programs in rare disorders.
The full-time faculty Pediatric Psychologist will join a multidisciplinary team that includes pediatric neuropsychology, psychology, hematology/oncology and endocrinology providers, as well as advance practice providers, social workers, and child life specialists. This is a primarily clinical position that integrates patient care, clinical research, and training. Candidates with a strong record of scholarship and extramural grant funding may be eligible for a reduction in clinical responsibilities if successful in securing grant funding to cover clinical effort.
The Pediatric Psychologist will be embedded within the Cancer Survivorship Program, which provides long-term follow-up care to survivors of childhood and adolescent cancer and bone marrow transplantation who have been off treatment for approximately two years or more. Clinical responsibilities include the provision of clinical assessment, brief intervention, and outpatient consultation-liaison services through the multidisciplinary Cancer Survivorship clinics in accordance with the Children's Oncology Group Long-term Follow-up Guidelines.
Opportunities to support and implement new program initiatives for adolescent and young adult survivors and integration into clinical research are also available. The psychologist will engage in interdisciplinary care including clinic evaluations; treatment planning; liaising with medical colleagues, adult care providers, and community partners; and education. The ideal candidate will have experience working with pediatric patients within hematology/oncology outpatient settings along with a strong background in providing evidence-based behavioral treatments (e.g., cognitive-behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, motivational interviewing). The psychologist will work with an interdisciplinary family support team that includes social work, child-life, music therapy, chaplaincy services, and hospital-based teachers to provide comprehensive psychosocial care. The position also involves close collaboration with the medical team, which includes oncologists, endocrinologists, genetic counselors, nurse practitioners, medical students, interns, fellows, and registered nurses. This position will allow collaborations with colleagues within Aflac, the Department of Epidemiology, Rollins School of Public Health, affiliations with the neighboring American Cancer Society, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Emory's NCI-designated cancer center, the Winship Cancer Institute, offering a wealth of opportunities for clinical research collaborations. Psychology faculty engage in educational training opportunities such as training, supervision, and didactics with psychology postdoctoral fellows and doctoral students from local universities. The Section of Aflac Psychology is a supportive environment with a variety of opportunities to engage in professional development and service activities.
Successful candidates will have:
- PhD/PsyD from an APA/CPA-accredited program in Clinical, Counseling, or School Psychology
- Completion of an APA/CPA-accredited internship
- Completion of a postdoctoral fellowship with specific focus in pediatric psychology
- Currently licensed as a psychologist or license eligible to practice in Georgia
- Eligible to obtain board certification within seven years of being hired
Salary and rank at Emory University School of Medicine will be commensurate with experience and accomplishment.
