Overview


Tanaq Management Services (TMS) delivers professional, scientific, and technical services and information technology (IT) solutions to federal agencies in health, technology, and other government services. TMS is a subsidiary of the St. George Tanaq Corporation (SGT), an Alaskan Native Corporation (ANC) committed to serving Federal customers while also giving back to the Tanaq native community and shareholders.


About the Role


We are seeking a Medical Epidemiologist (Part-time) to support our federal government customer. The Medical Epidemiologist will review protocols, manuscripts, and abstracts for the validity of epidemiological methods and human subjects research issues.


This is a fully remote position based in the United States. This position is contingent upon contract award.


Responsibilities


1. For protocols, review the following aspects of various types of documents:

  • The study objectives, research questions and hypotheses related to those objectives to be certain that they are correctly and fully specified and as appropriate measurable.
  • The proposed study design to determine whether the planned research will be able to answer the research questions of interest, and adheres to all human subjects requirements.
  • The sample size to assure that the study has adequate statistical power to estimate parameters of interest with the necessary precision or to conduct statistical tests for differences in study groups.
  • The proposed sampling plans, including plans for selecting sites and individuals, to assure that those plans will allow the study findings to be appropriately extrapolated to the population of interest without bias.
  • The proposed data collection plans to ensure that the data collection process is complete, timely (efficient) and able to gather the information needed for statistical analysis.
  • The proposed data analysis plan to be certain that the statistical methods proposed for analysis are correct and appropriate for the study design being used, and that the parameters to be estimated and statistical tests to be performed fully address the objectives, research questions and hypotheses for the study.
  • The plans for data management to ensure that data will be collected and computerized in a manner consistent with best quality assurance and validation practices.
  • The security and confidentiality procedures to assure that data are adequately protected and that the risks of intentional or inadvertent disclosure are minimized.
  • The plans for data backups and record retention to verify that protections are in place to prevent loss of data and, when appropriate, that CDC and HHS standards for data and record retention are being met.

2. For manuscripts, review the following aspects of various types of documents:

  • The study objectives, research questions and hypotheses to assure that they are fully and correctly specified.
  • The study design to determine whether the research that was conducted properly addressed the questions of interest.
  • The statistical methods used for analysis to assure that they were correct and appropriate given the research questions of interest, the study design, and the nature of the data that were collected.
  • The conclusions of the study to be certain that they are supported by the statistical research methods, and in the case of manuscripts that that clear statements of the limitations of the study are provided.
  • Reviewing tables and figures in manuscripts to determine whether they effectively convey the study findings and are formatted so that the average reader can easily understand them.
  • Spot checking results in the abstracts, manuscript text, tables and figures to be certain that the numbers in each are consistent with one another.
Requirements:


Required Experience and Skills

  • Minimum 4 years of experience as a clinician or medical officer.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of specialized epidemiology and public health expertise in the design, implementation, and dissemination of public health science related to HIV and tuberculosis.
  • Experience with protocol and manuscript development.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and reviewing skills.
  • Experience in conducting scientific reviews, including for human subjects issues.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and to prioritize assignments, while remaining flexible to changing priorities and new initiatives.
  • Ability to think critically, analyze situations and data, and solve problems.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced setting.
  • Experience working at the CDC or as part of a public health emergency response is a plus.
  • Effective organization and communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain government clearance.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.

Education and Training

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) from an accredited university required, additional degrees (MPH, Ph.D.) in Public Health or Epidemiology a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • May need to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
