What is a business systems analyst?

A business systems analyst, or systems analyst, oversees business systems—gathering and analyzing information or data, and determining where to make improvements. The duties of an analyst include working with management and end users to gain an understanding of how the computer system of the business works and how it could work better. They oversee how each new requirement or piece of functionality fits into the overall business process.

How do business systems analysts typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Business Systems Analysts frequently act as a bridge between technical teams, such as developers or IT specialists, and business stakeholders, like managers or end users. They gather and translate business requirements into technical specifications, facilitate meetings to clarify needs, and ensure all parties are aligned throughout the project lifecycle. Effective collaboration often involves regular communication, documentation updates, and coordinating user acceptance testing to ensure solutions meet business objectives. This collaborative environment helps foster a shared understanding and drives successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a business systems analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Business Systems Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, business process knowledge, and typically a bachelor's degree in information systems, business, or a related field. Familiarity with requirements gathering tools, workflow modeling software, and data analysis platforms like SQL or Tableau is commonly required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving abilities, and stakeholder management are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These skills ensure effective alignment between business needs and technical solutions, enabling organizations to optimize systems and achieve their goals.

Location: Richmond, VA
Employment Type: Contract-to-Hire or Direct Hire
Target Compensation: $80,000- $100,000+ depending on experience

Position Summary
We are seeking a Business Systems Analyst to support manufacturing business systems and major ERP initiatives. This role will work closely with manufacturing, engineering, operations, IT, and other cross-functional teams to understand business requirements, improve system functionality, and support the configuration and implementation of enterprise systems.

A key focus of this position will be supporting significant SAP S/4HANA implementation and transformation initiatives across the organization. The ideal candidate will bring a strong manufacturing background combined with hands-on experience with SAP, ERP, and/or MES systems. Experience configuring SAP S/4HANA in a manufacturing environment is highly preferred.

Key Responsibilities
  • Partner with manufacturing, operations, engineering, and IT teams to identify business needs and translate them into system requirements.
  • Support large-scale SAP S/4HANA implementation and transformation projects, with a focus on manufacturing functionality.
  • Analyze existing business processes and identify opportunities to improve system functionality, efficiency, and data flow.
  • Configure and support SAP S/4HANA functionality based on manufacturing business requirements.
  • Gather requirements, document business processes, develop functional specifications, and support solution design.
  • Work with technical teams and system stakeholders to troubleshoot issues and implement effective solutions.
  • Support integration and process flows between SAP, MES, ERP, and other manufacturing systems.
  • Participate in system testing, validation, user acceptance testing, and implementation activities.
  • Assist with system upgrades, enhancements, data-related initiatives, and continuous improvement projects.
  • Serve as a liaison between business stakeholders and technical teams to ensure solutions meet manufacturing requirements.
  • Provide ongoing support and guidance to system users and help drive adoption of new functionality.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Business, Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience working as a Business Systems Analyst, Systems Analyst, ERP Analyst, SAP Analyst, or similar role.
  • Strong experience supporting manufacturing operations and business processes.
  • Hands-on experience with SAP, ERP, and/or MES platforms.
  • Experience with SAP S/4HANA is strongly preferred, particularly within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience configuring SAP S/4HANA or other ERP functionality based on business requirements.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, systems, and data flows.
  • Experience participating in ERP implementations, system transformations, upgrades, or major enhancement projects.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with both technical teams and non-technical manufacturing stakeholders.

Ideal Background
The ideal candidate will be a manufacturing-focused systems professional who understands both the business and technology sides of an organization. Candidates with strong SAP/ERP or MES experience and exposure to major S/4HANA implementation projects are encouraged to apply. Experience on the manufacturing/operations side of SAP is particularly important; this role is not focused on SAP sales or finance functionality.
