What is a business systems analyst?

A business systems analyst, or systems analyst, oversees business systems—gathering and analyzing information or data, and determining where to make improvements. The duties of an analyst include working with management and end users to gain an understanding of how the computer system of the business works and how it could work better. They oversee how each new requirement or piece of functionality fits into the overall business process.

How do business systems analysts typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Business Systems Analysts frequently act as a bridge between technical teams, such as developers or IT specialists, and business stakeholders, like managers or end users. They gather and translate business requirements into technical specifications, facilitate meetings to clarify needs, and ensure all parties are aligned throughout the project lifecycle. Effective collaboration often involves regular communication, documentation updates, and coordinating user acceptance testing to ensure solutions meet business objectives. This collaborative environment helps foster a shared understanding and drives successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a business systems analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Business Systems Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, business process knowledge, and typically a bachelor's degree in information systems, business, or a related field. Familiarity with requirements gathering tools, workflow modeling software, and data analysis platforms like SQL or Tableau is commonly required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving abilities, and stakeholder management are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These skills ensure effective alignment between business needs and technical solutions, enabling organizations to optimize systems and achieve their goals.

Job description

At Cuningham, our purpose is to design a better world with deep respect for the real one. We're guided by a vision of a world made better by selfless design, and we live that out through five values: celebrate curiosity, delight in the craft, design responsibly, get better together, and care for each other. Every role at our firm, including the ones that run behind the scenes, plays a part in making that vision real.
The Business Systems Analyst is responsible for advancing the firm's use of business systems and data to support operational performance, client relationship management, and strategic decision-making. This role focuses on optimizing and connecting Deltek Vantagepoint and Power BI, improving data quality and reporting, and enabling effective use of CRM and operational data.
The position requires a strong understanding of AEC project-based business operations, including labor planning, and the ability to translate business needs into scalable data and system solutions. This role also plays a key part in validating ("pressure testing") data and dashboards to ensure accuracy, reliability, and usability - work that reflects our value of delighting in the craft, applied to the systems that keep the firm running well.
What you will be doing:
  • Analyze business systems, workflows, and data structures to identify gaps, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Gather, define, and translate business requirements into reporting, data models, and system enhancements.
  • Design, develop, and continuously improve Power BI dashboards and reports, including standardizing and enhancing existing reporting environments.
  • Pressure test data, dashboards, and reporting outputs to ensure accuracy, reliability, and confidence in business reporting.
  • Develop a strong understanding of firm operations, including project lifecycles, financial performance, labor planning, and resource management, to inform analysis and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with Marketing, Research, Finance, HR, Project Management, Operations, and other business teams to align systems and reporting with organizational needs.
  • Produce and maintain management dashboards, operational reports, and system performance metrics.
  • Identify opportunities to improve business processes, reporting capabilities, and system functionality, including evaluating emerging technologies such as AI and automation.

Deltek VantagePoint Accountabilities:
  • Serve as the firm's subject matter expert and functional administrator for Deltek Vantagepoint.
  • Configure and maintain Vantagepoint workflows, fields, security, dashboards, reports, and system settings to support business operations.
  • Support project setup, client and CRM data, billing, resource planning, labor planning, and financial reporting within Vantagepoint.
  • Troubleshoot system issues, identify opportunities for optimization, and provide advanced user support.
  • Lead testing, upgrades, implementations, and rollout of new Vantagepoint functionality and enhancements.
  • Develop user documentation, deliver training, and promote consistent system adoption and best practices across the firm.
  • Ensure the integrity, consistency, and governance of Vantagepoint data, including proper structuring and integration for analytics outside of Vantagepoint, such as Power BI, to support accurate reporting and informed business decisions.

What we look for:
  • 5-10 years of experience in business systems analysis, data analytics, or a related role
  • Experience within an Architecture / AEC firm
  • Advanced experience administering or supporting Deltek Vantagepoint within an architecture, engineering, or professional services environment, including system configuration, reporting, workflow optimization, and user support.
  • Proficiency in Power BI, including dashboard development and data modeling
  • Experience analyzing, organizing, and validating data to support business decisions
  • Strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills
  • Ability to translate business needs into data, reporting, and system solutions
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills
