Job description

Business Development Manager

Industry: Building Materials / LBM
Locations: Manitoba, Saskatchewan or Thunder Bay, ON
Compensation: $90,000-$120,000+ Base (Depending on Experience) + Bonus + Mileage + Career Trajectory + Benefits + Pension
The Opportunity
Our client, a well-established and growing organization within the lumber and building materials industry, is looking for a Business Development Manager to grow and support its business across Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Northwestern Ontario.
This is a relationship-driven sales role combining new business development, strategic account management and member/customer support. You'll work closely with independent lumber and building material dealers, developing existing relationships while identifying new opportunities across the territory.
This isn't a transactional sales role. Success comes from understanding your customers' businesses, earning their trust and building relationships that can develop over several years.
What You'll Do
  • Manage and grow relationships with existing customers/members across the territory.
  • Prospect and develop new business with independent lumberyards and building material dealers.
  • Build trusted relationships with owners and senior decision-makers.
  • Understand customers' businesses, markets and growth objectives to identify opportunities.
  • Analyze purchasing activity and market information to uncover areas for growth.
  • Build and manage a long-term pipeline of prospective customers.
  • Collaborate with leadership and colleagues on larger strategic opportunities.
  • Balance in-person customer visits with phone, virtual and home-office-based business development.
  • Maintain strong pipeline management, reporting and follow-up.
What We're Looking For
Building materials industry experience is essential. You need to understand the LBM environment and be comfortable walking into a lumberyard, talking shop and establishing credibility with owners and operators.
Your background could come from building materials manufacturing, distribution, lumberyards/building centres, territory sales or operations.
We're open to both experienced industry professionals and up-and-coming candidates ready to take the next step, provided you bring:
  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills.
  • A hunter mentality with the confidence to open new doors.
  • Patience and strategic thinking to manage longer sales cycles.
  • A consultative, customer-focused sales approach.
  • A practical, down-to-earth personality that connects well with independent dealers.
  • Strong organization, prospecting and follow-up skills.
  • The ability to be equally productive on the road and from a home office.
  • A willingness to learn, develop and grow with the organization.
Territory & Travel
The territory covers Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Thunder Bay/Northwestern Ontario market.
Candidates can be based in Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina, Thunder Bay, or another suitable location within the territory, ideally within approximately 45 minutes of an airport.
Travel is primarily by vehicle and typically involves 4-8 overnight stays per month, balanced with remote prospecting, customer calls and territory planning.
Compensation & Benefits
  • $90,000-$120,000+ base salary, depending on experience
  • Performance-based bonus
  • Mileage reimbursement and business expenses
  • Comprehensive benefits
  • Pension plan
  • Laptop and phone
  • Home-based position
Why Join?
This is an opportunity to join an established Canadian building materials organization entering an exciting period of growth.
You'll take ownership of an existing customer base while having significant opportunity to expand the territory. You'll also have the support of an experienced leadership and business development team, creating an excellent opportunity for either an established industry professional or someone with strong potential looking to take the next step in their career.
