What is a business continuity planner?

A business continuity planner develops and documents strategies for business recovery in the event of a natural disaster or catastrophic event. A large component of these strategies is the recovery of computer software, information systems, and other business related technology. As a business continuity planner, you work with management to define the business processes that must remain uninterrupted until full recovery is achieved and provide training resources to employees to ensure data is regularly backed up offsite. Your job duties thus include facility planning, ensuring remote employee access to computer systems, communication planning, and identifying failover solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a business continuity planner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Business Continuity Planner, you need expertise in risk assessment, disaster recovery planning, and regulatory compliance, typically backed by a relevant degree and certifications like CBCP or ISO 22301. Familiarity with business continuity management software, risk analysis tools, and incident response systems is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and leadership skills help facilitate cross-department collaboration and effective crisis management. These competencies ensure organizations can quickly recover from disruptions and maintain critical operations under adverse conditions.

How does a business continuity planner typically collaborate with other departments during a crisis or disruption?

A Business Continuity Planner works closely with various departments such as IT, operations, human resources, and executive leadership to coordinate response efforts during a crisis. They facilitate communication channels, help implement contingency plans, and ensure that each department understands its role in maintaining critical business functions. This collaboration is essential for minimizing downtime and ensuring a smooth, organized recovery process. Effective interdepartmental teamwork and clear, timely updates are key components of the role.
