RE-1 Valley School District is seeking dependable, safety-focused individuals to join our transportation team as School Bus Drivers. Bus drivers play an essential role in our district by ensuring students travel safely to and from school, activities, and school events.
This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with students, value safety, and want to support the success of our schools and community.
REPORTS TO: Transportation Director
SALARY RANGE & CATEGORY: $21.85/hour (depending on experience) on Classified Hourly Salary Schedule
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
WORK CALENDAR: 150 days
Part Time, not benefit eligible; 4-day school week (Tuesday - Friday)
You must be 21 years of age or older to be employed as a Bus Driver.
Job Summary: The School Bus Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school, activities, and special events. Drivers operate district school buses in accordance with federal, state, and district regulations while maintaining a safe environment for students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Student Transportation
  • Safely transport students to and from school following assigned routes and schedules.
  • Load and unload students safely at designated stops.
  • Maintain appropriate student behavior on the bus.
  • Ensure all students are accounted for before departure and after arrival.

Safety and Compliance
  • Follow all federal, state, and district transportation regulations.
  • Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Maintain safe driving practices under varying road and weather conditions.
  • Report accidents, incidents, mechanical concerns, or student discipline issues promptly.

Vehicle Operation and Care
  • Maintain cleanliness and order of assigned bus.
  • Monitor vehicle condition and report maintenance needs.
  • Fuel buses and follow district procedures for vehicle care.

Communication
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, school staff, and transportation supervisors.
  • Maintain accurate records of mileage, inspections, and incidents.
  • Attend required transportation meetings and training sessions.

Additional Duties
  • Transport students to extracurricular events, field trips, or athletic activities as assigned.
  • Assist students with safe boarding and exiting procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director or administration.

Qualifications
  1. CDL preferred but not required. Willing to obtain the CDL through district offered training and certification program.
  2. Must be able to obtain driver license "S" endorsement
  3. Pass random drug testing and CDL physical required
  4. CDL Class B/P2S endorsement preferred but not required to be hired

Experience
  • Previous bus driving or commercial driving experience preferred but not required.
  • Experience working with children is beneficial.
