What is brand design?

Brand design is the process of creating a visual identity for a company, product, or service, which includes elements like logos, color schemes, typography, and imagery. The goal is to establish a distinctive and cohesive look that communicates the brand's values and personality to its audience. Effective brand design helps build recognition, trust, and loyalty, setting a business apart from competitors. It often involves collaboration across marketing, design, and strategy teams to ensure consistency across all brand touchpoints.

Are brand designers in demand?

Yes, brand designers are in demand as companies increasingly focus on building strong visual identities and brand recognition. The role often requires skills in graphic design, branding strategy, and proficiency with tools like Adobe Creative Suite, with opportunities available across various industries and levels of experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Brand Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Brand Designer, you need expertise in visual design, branding principles, and proficiency with design software, typically supported by a degree in graphic design or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and knowledge of web design systems are essential. Creativity, strong communication, and collaboration skills help Brand Designers develop compelling visuals and align with client goals. These skills ensure cohesive brand identities that effectively engage audiences and support business objectives.

What does a brand designer do?

A brand designer creates visual identities for companies, including logos, color schemes, typography, and branding guidelines. They work to ensure consistent and appealing brand representation across various platforms, often using design tools like Adobe Creative Suite. Strong understanding of marketing and branding principles is essential for this role.

What is the difference between Brand Design vs Graphic Design?

AspectBrand DesignGraphic Design
FocusCreating a cohesive brand identity, including logos, color schemes, and brand messagingDesigning visual content like posters, brochures, and digital graphics
SkillsBrand strategy, visual identity, storytellingTypography, layout, visual communication
Work EnvironmentBrand agencies, marketing departments, freelance branding projectsAdvertising agencies, print and digital media companies
CredentialsDesign degree, branding certifications often preferredDesign degree, graphic design certifications often preferred

While both roles involve visual creativity, Brand Design focuses on developing a consistent brand identity and strategy, whereas Graphic Design emphasizes creating specific visual content for various media. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or project focus.

How do brand designers typically collaborate with marketing and product teams during a project?

Brand designers often work closely with marketing and product teams to ensure visual consistency and effective communication of the brand’s message. Collaboration usually involves regular meetings to align on campaign goals, sharing feedback on design concepts, and iterating on visual assets based on team input. Designers may attend brainstorming sessions, present design proposals, and adapt their work to fit both marketing strategies and product requirements. This close teamwork helps ensure that branding remains cohesive across all customer touchpoints.

Is AI replacing designers?

AI is transforming the field of brand design by automating repetitive tasks and assisting with data analysis, but it does not replace the creative and strategic skills of designers. Brand designers continue to play a crucial role in developing unique visual identities, storytelling, and user experience, often using AI tools to enhance their work. Successful designers adapt by integrating AI technologies into their workflow and focusing on skills that require human insight and creativity.

Job description

At Crocs, Inc., every career offers a chance to make a real impact. No two journeys look the same. And that's exactly how we like it. Whether you're welcoming customers into our stores, collaborating with global teams at our headquarters, or keeping operations moving at our distribution centers, your impact is real and valued. At Crocs, Inc. you're not expected to fit a mold. You're encouraged to break it and create something better.
Overview
We are seeking an Associate Design Director, Brand Design to help shape and evolve the visual expression of the Crocs brand across campaigns, product storytelling, packaging, retail, digital, and experiential touchpoints.
This role is rooted in strong design leadership, systems thinking, and elevated brand craft. The ideal candidate brings deep experience in building cohesive visual identities, developing scalable creative systems, and delivering culturally relevant design that feels distinctive, expressive, and wonderfully unordinary.
Working closely with Creative, Brand, Marketing, and Product teams, this leader will help guide the development of premium brand experiences across channels while ensuring consistency, clarity, and creative excellence throughout the customer journey.
This role will also stay informed on emerging creative tools and technologies - including AI-assisted workflows and evolving digital platforms - with a mindset toward improving creative efficiency, accelerating workflows, and expanding how teams create.
THE KIND OF CREATIVE WHO THRIVES HERE
  • You care deeply about brand expression and design craft.
  • You think in systems while maintaining a sharp eye for detail - from typography and packaging to campaigns and storytelling.
  • You understand how strong visual identities scale across product, retail, digital, social, and experiential environments while still feeling fresh, emotional, and culturally connected.
  • You're collaborative, curious, and highly conceptual, with the ability to lead creative work from strategy through execution.
  • You stay engaged with evolving creative tools and emerging technologies, not as the center of the work, but as part of a modern creative practice that helps teams work smarter and explore new possibilities.
  • You're inspired by culture, design, and the unexpected.
  • At Crocs, we call that Wonderfully Unordinary.

What You'll Do
  • Lead and contribute to the development of premium brand design across campaigns, product launches, packaging, retail, digital, and experiential channels.
  • Help evolve and maintain scalable visual systems that strengthen consistency across the Crocs brand ecosystem.
  • Drive strong brand storytelling through typography, composition, color, motion, imagery, and design systems.
  • Partner closely with Creative Directors, Designers, Brand, Marketing, and Product teams to bring integrated creative concepts to life.
  • Elevate the quality and consistency of brand expression across all consumer touchpoints.
  • Contribute to packaging design and product storytelling initiatives that connect brand, culture, and consumer experience.
  • Guide and mentor designers while championing high standards of creative craft and execution.
  • Collaborate with external agencies, artists, photographers, and production partners to deliver innovative and culturally relevant creative work.
  • Explore new creative tools, workflows, and emerging technologies that can support efficiency, experimentation, and modern content creation.
  • Keep up to date with evolving industry trends, build innovation, and emerging platforms that influence brand storytelling and creative development.

What You'll Bring to the Table
  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Communication Design, Visual Communication, or related field.
  • At least 8+ years of experience in brand design, creative direction, visual systems, packaging, or integrated marketing design.
  • At least 3+ years of leadership experience.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating elevated brand expression, campaign development, building frameworks, product presentation, and storytelling across multiple channels.
  • Exceptional design craft with strong typography, layout, composition, color, and visual storytelling skills.
  • Experience crafting scalable creative frameworks and cohesive brand identities across physical and digital environments.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and modern creative production workflows.
  • Understanding of evolving creative technologies, digital platforms, and AI-assisted tools as part of contemporary creative workflows.
  • Strong leadership, communication, collaboration, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining high creative standards in a fast-paced environment.
  • Passion for culture, design, and the Crocs brand - with an instinct for work that feels expressive, authentic, and wonderfully unordinary.
