What is a bourbon internship?

A Bourbon Internship is a temporary, educational position within the bourbon industry, often offered by distilleries or related companies. Interns gain hands-on experience in various aspects of bourbon production, such as distillation, aging, quality control, marketing, and hospitality. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in learning more about the bourbon business, developing industry-specific skills, and networking with professionals. Internships may last from a few weeks to several months and can be a valuable stepping stone to a career in the spirits industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a bourbon intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bourbon Intern, you need a foundational knowledge of distillation processes, chemistry, and an interest in the spirits industry, often supported by coursework in food science or chemical engineering. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, sensory analysis tools, and data management systems is typically required. Keen attention to detail, strong communication, and a willingness to learn make candidates stand out in this role. These skills ensure interns can contribute effectively to production, quality control, and innovation in a highly regulated and quality-focused environment.

What types of hands-on experiences can I expect during a bourbon internship, and how do these contribute to career growth in the spirits industry?

During a Bourbon Internship, you can expect to be involved in a variety of hands-on activities such as assisting with the distillation process, quality control, bottling, and even marketing or event planning, depending on the distillery's size. These experiences provide practical insights into both the production and business sides of the bourbon industry. Working closely with experienced distillers and team members, you'll develop a strong foundational understanding of operations, compliance, and brand storytelling, which are essential for advancing in the spirits sector. Interns who show initiative and adaptability often find opportunities for full-time roles or advanced positions within the company or the broader industry.
