What is a bookkeeping certificate?

A Bookkeeping Certificate job typically involves managing financial records, tracking transactions, and ensuring accuracy in an organization's financial statements. Professionals with this certification may work as bookkeepers, accounting clerks, or payroll specialists. The certificate demonstrates proficiency in essential bookkeeping skills, such as ledger management, invoicing, and financial reporting. Many employers value this credential as proof of competency and reliability in financial record-keeping.

What are the typical responsibilities of someone with a bookkeeping certificate?

Individuals with a Bookkeeping Certificate are often responsible for recording daily financial transactions, reconciling bank statements, processing invoices, and preparing financial reports. You may also support payroll processing, manage accounts payable or receivable, and assist with month-end or year-end close procedures. Depending on the organization, you might collaborate closely with accountants, managers, or small business owners to ensure all financial data is accurate and up to date. These varied tasks provide valuable, hands-on experience and are essential for the financial health of the business.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive with a bookkeeping certificate?

To thrive in a role requiring a Bookkeeping Certificate, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, attention to detail, and experience with financial recordkeeping, typically demonstrated through formal training or certification. Proficiency with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel, or Xero is commonly expected, and holding a recognized bookkeeping certificate or diploma adds credibility. Strong organizational skills, reliability, and clear communication help you manage deadlines and collaborate effectively with colleagues or clients. These abilities are crucial for ensuring accurate financial records, maintaining compliance, and supporting business operations.

Are bookkeepers still in demand?

Bookkeepers are still in demand as businesses require accurate financial record-keeping and often seek professionals skilled in accounting software like QuickBooks. The role remains essential across various industries, with job opportunities available for those with certifications and experience in managing financial transactions and reconciliations.

Can I get a job with just a bookkeeping certificate?

A bookkeeping certificate can help you qualify for entry-level bookkeeping positions, but many employers prefer candidates with some work experience or additional skills such as proficiency in accounting software like QuickBooks. While a certificate demonstrates foundational knowledge, advancing in bookkeeping roles may require further training or certifications and practical experience. Employers often look for a combination of education, skills, and experience when hiring for bookkeeping jobs.

Is a bookkeeping certificate worth it?

A bookkeeping certificate can enhance job prospects by demonstrating knowledge of accounting principles, software like QuickBooks, and financial record management. It is often valued by employers and can lead to higher earning potential, especially when combined with practical experience. However, the value depends on the industry and the individual's career goals.

What does a certified bookkeeper do?

A certified bookkeeper records and maintains financial transactions, manages accounts payable and receivable, and prepares financial reports. They often use accounting software and ensure compliance with financial regulations. Certification demonstrates expertise and can improve job prospects in bookkeeping roles.

SENIOR ACCOUNTANT

$75,000–$80,000

Greenfield, Indiana (east side of Indianapolis)

Bookkeeping Plus, Inc.

Are you an experienced accountant who enjoys challenging, varied work—but would also like work/life balanceflexibility, and a family-friendly environment?

Bookkeeping Plus, Inc. is a well-established, woman-owned accounting firm providing advanced accounting, financial reporting, and analysis services to nonprofits, businesses, schools, and government entities around Indiana and beyond.

We are seeking a Senior Accountant with strong general-ledger and financial-statement experience who can perform financial statement analysis, solve accounting problems, and help clients understand their finances.

We offer a professional and supportive culture where you can do challenging and diverse accounting work without sacrificing your personal life.

Over the last four decades, our company has grown from a one-woman bookkeeping service into a respected accounting firm providing controller-level accounting to a wide range of organizations nationwide.

With approximately 30 employees, we are one of the largest non-CPA accounting firms in the region.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Prepare and analyze financial statements
  • Manage general ledger activity and reconciliations
  • Perform month-end closing processes
  • Do budgeting and forecasting
  • Provide full-cycle accounting services
  • Work directly with clients to meet their accounting and financial-reporting needs
  • Perform controller-level functions appropriate to your experience

The variety of clients, industries, and assignments keeps the work interesting and provides opportunities to expand your accounting knowledge.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field

Must-Have Experience:

  • At least five years of substantial general ledger accounting experience
  • Ability to prepare and analyze financial statements
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound professional judgment
  • Ability to manage multiple client responsibilities in an organized, professional environment
  • Nice-to-Have: nonprofit experience

We are not a CPA firm, so CPA certification is not required.  And we don’t do income taxes.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE WORKING HERE

Bookkeeping Plus, Inc. is a woman-owned company with a 39-year record of steady growth. Many of our employees have been with us for 10–15 years or longer, which reflects the team-oriented culture we’ve created here. We’re proud of our reputation as a great place to work.

  • Genuine emphasis on work/life balance
  • Family-friendly
  • Flexible work hours (e.g. daily start and end times)
  • A comfortable, collaborative professional office
  • Interesting work with a wide variety of for-profit, nonprofit, school, and government clients
  • And yes, we even have two small office poodles. . .

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Salary: $75,000–$80,000, depending on experience and qualifications.

Benefits include:

  • Health insurance with Anthem
  • Dental, vision, and life insurance
  • 401(k) with employer match
  • Paid Time Off and Paid Holidays
  • Comp time availability
  • Flexible, family-friendly work environment
