What does a book publishing copy editor do?

A Book Publishing Copy Editor reviews manuscripts to correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and ensure consistency in style and tone. They also check for factual accuracy, clarity, and readability, making suggestions to improve the text while preserving the author's voice. Copy editors often work closely with authors and other editors to prepare manuscripts for publication, ensuring the final product is polished and professional.

How does a book publishing copy editor typically collaborate with authors and other members of the editorial team during the editing process?

Book Publishing Copy Editors work closely with authors, developmental editors, and proofreaders to ensure manuscripts are clear, consistent, and error-free. They often communicate directly with authors to clarify language or resolve ambiguities, while coordinating with editors to maintain the publication’s style and standards. Frequent check-ins, document exchanges with tracked changes, and constructive feedback loops are common. This collaborative environment helps produce polished, high-quality books while allowing copy editors to learn from other professionals in the publishing workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a book publishing copy editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Book Publishing Copy Editor, you need strong command of grammar, punctuation, and style, typically supported by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with style guides (such as Chicago Manual of Style), track changes in word processors, and publishing software like Adobe InCopy is important. Attention to detail, time management, and clear communication with authors and editors are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure error-free manuscripts, uphold publishing standards, and facilitate smooth collaboration throughout the editorial process.

Location: New York, New York
Summary:
We are seeking a New York-based Copy Editor (Coordinator) to join our global Electronic Publishing (EP) team. The role will liaise with EP team members in our U.S. and European offices to publish research, rating reports, press releases, and marketing materials to KBRA.com and external platforms. Please note that this is an editing role and not a writing position.
About the Team:
The Editorial Department, as part of KBRA's EP team, thrives on maintaining the company's mission of providing timely, transparent, and thought-provoking research and ratings. KBRA's core values of Innovation, Collaboration, and Integrity play a big role in everything we do, and the team strives to establish clear communication channels with our analytical staff at all times.
The role will include the following responsibilities:
  • Edit a variety of time-sensitive materials (topical research and rating reports) in American and British English for quality, tone, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and adherence to the company style guide.
  • Review documents using Track Changes and PDF markups to provide rewrite suggestions.
  • Perform quality assurance proofreading for documents that were converted from Word and Excel into our proprietary publishing platform.
  • Apply various proofreading styles (full read, slug read, etc.) to ensure high quality within established timelines.
  • Work closely with our Desktop Publishers to provide feedback.
  • Track and provide timely feedback on recurring errors.
  • Document and formalize processes as they evolve.
  • Check that graphs and tables are correctly referenced throughout the text.
  • Possess tact when defending editorial judgment and company quality standards.
  • Prioritize and coordinate competing work demands and maintain composure under pressure.
  • Work with analysts, Credit Policy, Compliance, and Legal departments to improve the quality of published materials.
  • Help familiarize analysts with overall editorial/compliance procedures, writing best practices, template usage, publishing platform, and desktop publishing-related systems.
  • Leverage AI tools to improve quality and turnaround times.

You will be successful in this role if you possess:
  • Bachelor's degree and relevant experience in a fast-paced, deadline-driven publishing environment.
  • Minimum of 3-8+ years of previous experience as a copy editor or similar role working as part of a team in a corporate environment or news desk.
  • Experience in headline writing and reshaping press releases a plus.
  • Confidence in rewriting text sensitively without altering the meaning.
  • Resolving and raising queries directly with the authors, including inconsistencies or when writing is unclear.
  • Knowledge of financial markets, bond/equity markets, the credit ratings industry, and financial terminology is desirable, but prior employment in other highly regulated industries is acceptable.
  • Experience with publishing platforms or Content Management Systems (e.g., EidosMedia Méthode).
  • Excellent Microsoft Word and Excel skills.
  • Familiarity and working knowledge of AI tools in an editorial/production capacity.
  • Possess strong verbal and communication skills, and the ability to communicate with analysts and colleagues at all levels.
  • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently and with team members in a collaborative environment.
  • Flexibility in working outside of regular hours (9:00 am - 6:00 pm) if needed.
  • Familiarity with Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT for research, data insights, and general productivity is a plus.

Salary Range:
The anticipated annual base salary range for this full-time position is $85,000 - $115,000 Offer amounts are determined by factors such as experience, skills, geography, and other job-related factors.
Benefits:
  • A flexible hybrid work schedule - Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays in the office
