Job description

Title: Host/Editor

Reports to: Executive Producer of Audio Innovation

Location: Providence

Position Type: Full time, Exempt

Compensation Range: $65,000 - $70,000

Ocean State Media is the locally owned and operated award-winning public media organization serving Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. About the Role:

The Host/Editor will serve as primary fill-in host for radio broadcasts and work with other editors to oversee Ocean State Media’s daily news report on radio and website platforms.

As fill-in Host, the person in this position will record and produce radio breaks and/or host the Morning, Afternoon, or Weekend radio programs on Ocean State Media.

As Editor, the person in this position will assign, edit and occasionally create news stories for radio and digital platforms.

After an initial training period, this full-time position may primarily shift to required evening hours (11 a.m. to 7 p.m). The person in this position will be occasionally asked to work on Saturdays as a fill-in Weekend host. The position is based in Providence, Rhode Island but can include some remote work. The Host/Editor reports to the Executive Producer of Audio Innovation.

Duties may include:

  • Creating strategies to tackle the news of the day and assigning reporters stories.

  • Editing radio and digital stories on deadline.

  • Reporting and producing daily newscast elements, e.g. wraps, cut/scripts, readers, short digital stories.

  • Fill-in hosting: serving as the primary fill-in host for all regular on-air hosting shifts by announcing, producing and engineering Ocean State Media’s on-air programming.

  • Hosting special coverage and breaking news outside of normal hours as necessary.

  • Producing and engineering interviews and segments for other newsroom staff

  • Operating the automation system, audio board and other equipment as necessary.

  • Participating in community engagement activities and events as assigned.

  • Fundraising: Participating in regular on-air fund drives as assigned.

  • Other duties as determined by the Executive Producer for Audio Innovation and the Director of News & Storytelling

  • Some holiday or breaking-news coverage may be required.

Requirements of the position

  • At least 5 years of professional journalism experience including at least 2 years of experience editing and at least 1 year of on-air broadcast experience

  • Knowledge of regional communities and issues

  • Excellent writing and editing skills

  • Proficiency in multi-platform journalism, including audio production

  • A demonstrated ability to maintain the highest journalistic standards under deadline pressure

  • A passion for working collaboratively with reporters of different backgrounds and skill sets

  • A track record of exhibiting cultural competency in their work and their professional life
