Overview
Join our team as a Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst (Senior or Lead)
The Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst (Senior/Lead) is responsible for the design, development, support, and maintenance of Business Intelligence applications and tools that transform data into actionable insights supporting SPP's operations and strategic decisions. This includes researching, designing, and documenting systems and applications; managing data retrieval and analysis; building reports and visualizations; and identifying automation and continuous improvement opportunities within team and departmental processes. The role applies business and technical concepts to analyze errors, troubleshoot software, provide customer support, and resolve application and usability issues while ensuring the effective, reliable operation of BI systems.
At the Senior level, the BI Analyst is expected to be a subject matter expert in one or more application areas, develop centralized and efficient methods for managing systems to minimize downtime, collaborate with technical teams on system architecture and design improvements, and provide training, coaching, and guidance to other team members while working with minimal supervision.
At the Lead level, the BI Analyst additionally establishes the BI vision and strategy, defines system architecture for assigned areas, leads the design and implementation of enterprise BI solutions, and recommends hardware and software acquisitions or upgrades. Lead BI Analysts provide enterprise-level subject matter expertise across multiple application areas, guide and occasionally assign work to other team members, represent SPP on internal and external committees or working groups as needed, and work independently to develop and execute project plans, prioritize assignments, resolve complex issues, and lead peers within the Applications teams.
Core Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and support Business Intelligence applications, architecture, dashboards, reports, and scalable data models to meet business and analytics requirements.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to gather and analyze business requirements, translating them into technical specifications and interactive BI solutions that surface trends, patterns, and insights.
  • Install, configure, maintain, and monitor BI tools and related systems; investigate and resolve issues to ensure reliability, performance, and minimal user downtime, including participation in a 24/7/365 on-call rotation.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation (e.g., architecture, backup and recovery, upgrade/migration procedures, implementation plans) and ensure software integration meets compliance and technical specifications (SOC1, FERC CIP).
  • Support audits by providing evidence, helping develop requirements, and addressing findings.
  • At the Senior level, demonstrate detailed knowledge of assigned BI applications and systems; independently develop, implement, and support complex, integrated solutions; remediate customer-reported issues using advanced skills; recommend and implement improvements; and provide training and occasional mentoring to other employees while deepening technical skills in your focus area.
  • At the Lead level, provide enterprise-level subject matter expertise; lead the design and implementation of BI solutions and roadmaps; coordinate implementation plans across multiple teams, vendors, and stakeholders; mentor junior and senior team members; serve as a technical liaison with business areas, IT, and vendors; drive innovative improvements to systems and processes; and lead SDLC/project lifecycle activities from requirements through deployment, including self-service analytics platform design and optimization.

Qualifications
  • Experience:
    • Senior - 6 years in IT development and/or support (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
    • Lead - 8 years in IT development and/or support (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent job-related experience required.
  • Travel: Minimal travel required (approximately 10%).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Senior: Proficient technical knowledge of data modeling and ETL tools; at least two (2) years of energy or utility industry business experience.
  • Lead: Advanced technical knowledge of data modeling and ETL practices; five (5) or more years of utility or energy industry experience and a comprehensive understanding of SPP's core business model.

Other Requirements
  • Proficient-expert skills in one or more Business Intelligence tools (Senior: proficient; Lead: proven expert).
  • Strong to expert data analytics, reporting, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Solid to expert working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and/or Unix/Linux and database management systems.
  • Strong to expert written and verbal communication, customer service, and organizational skills.
  • Working to advanced knowledge of SDLC and project life cycle practices.
  • Understanding of and compliance with SPP Policies and Procedures.
