As a battalion chief, you are a high-ranking member of a fire department. Your rank comes with the responsibilities of managing a station that works to ensure the safety of the public. You command other firefighters, handle administrative duties, and dispatch crew members in the event of a fire. While this position is highly respected, your rank is below the fire chief and the assistant chief. The responsibilities of a battalion chief also involve training new recruits.

PURPOSE OF POSITION PURPOSE OF POSITION Performs a variety of highly technical and responsible activities that requires a great deal of independent judgment and initiative. Performs a variety of administrative, supervisory and technical work in the supervision and administration of fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, and fire prevention activities, as well as emergency and non-emergency services to the public. Works under the general supervision of the Fire Chief, or assigned designee.
This position is considered an emergency/disaster position. During emergency conditions, all City employees are automatically considered emergency service workers. City employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation, which requires that the employee be ready, willing, and able to report to work during emergencies and/or disasters of any kind, notwithstanding any other commitments the employee may have and be able perform emergency services duties, as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Must possess bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Homeland Security, Emergency Medical Services or a closely related field, from an accredited institution or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Five (5) or more years of experience, with three (3) years as a Fire Lieutenant capable of fulfilling Battalion Chief responsibilities or equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience. Must possess, valid Florida Driver's License with Emergency Vehicle Operator's Course (EVOC) certificate or equivalent.
Must possess and maintain a certificate Florida State Minimum Standards Certification as a Firefighter in accordance with F.S. 633.412. Must hold current certification and licensing as Paramedic in accordance with State of Florida, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, Florida Administrative 64J-1.009
Autonomous Paramedic Status. Must possess and maintain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association. State of Florida Firefighter II Certificate of Compliance.
State of Florida Fire Officer II. Fire Officer Development Academy. Have completed 240 hours of supervised ride up as Battalion training and have been signed off in the Supervisory/Battalion Chief Task Book (to be achieved after completion of two years as company officer), or equivalent training.

There may be additional NIMS required, which will be scheduled by your supervisor. Meet all pre-employment requirements in accordance with state and department standards. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS 1.
ADMINISTRATIVE Assists in the preparation and administration of the Fire Operations Division budget. Supervises shift Lieutenants and Company Officers/OICs. Oversees various programs related to the fire department strategic plan.
Makes budgetary recommendations to the Fire Chief through the Deputy Chief. Attends meetings and functions for the Fire Chief or Deputy Chief. Reviews disciplinary recommendations of subordinate supervisors as directed.
Responds to alarms and directs the activities at the scene of emergencies as required. Prepares grants related to Department activities/equipment/training. Prepares a variety of reports and records, including personnel.
Monitors and observes departmental activities to ensure that conduct and performance conform to department standards. Performs incident command functions as directed by the Department policies and/or the direction of the Deputy Chief or Fire Chief. Supervises maintenance of departmental equipment, vehicles, supplies and facilities as directed by the Deputy Chief.
Performs a significant role in computer data retrieval and statistical information review in support of the City's performance measurement and reporting program. Prepares a variety of reports and records including personnel records, training calendars, lesson plans and requisitions. Performs a significant role in disaster mitigation, response, recovery, and strategic development of Citywide Disaster Planning as directed by the Deputy Chief.
2. EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES Establishes, maintains, and monitors initiatives and programs to ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and Medical Director Guidelines; rules/regulations; and laws related to Emergency Medical Services in an Advanced Life Support agency. Monitors short and long-range training objectives and assists in budgetary planning.
Represents the department in EMS related matters to external agencies and groups. May serve as a department EMS Preceptor and member of the FIT Committee. 3.
FIRE SUPPRESSION AND RELATED TRAINING Establishes, maintains, and monitors initiatives and programs to ensure compliance with applicable State rules/regulations and laws related to Firefighter training. Interacts with Shift Lieutenants to identify and address specific training needs for shift members. Represents the department in related matters to the Central Florida Fire Institute and local area Fire/Rescue departments.
Oversees and monitors Fire Department related public education for members of the residential and business community. 4. SAFETY Establishes, maintains, and monitors initiatives and programs to ensure compliance with applicable State and local rules/regulations and laws related to Firefighter safety.
Investigates accidents and safety related incidents, determines causative factors, and formulates recommendations that prevent recurrence and foster a safe working environment. Reviews safety incidents reports for accuracy before processing through administration. Serves on the Fire Department's Safety Committee as directed by the Fire Chief.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS Attend seminars and workshops related to duties and responsibilities. Prepare general correspondence. Provide back up to other related positions.
Attends conferences and meetings to keep abreast of current trends in the field; represents the City in a variety of local, county, state and other meetings. Coordinates activities with other supervisors or other City departments and exchanges information with officers in other fire departments. Maintains contact with public, department officers and other City officials in the performance of fire department activities.
Assists and provides operational input to the Deputy Chief, Command Staff, and Medical Director to establish and maintain procedural guidelines for EMS field delivery, to include recommending and implementing timely corrective measures. Conducts emergency and non-emergency radio communications, as required, and maintains availability by radio and/or telephone on a continuous basis unless otherwise permitted by the Deputy Chief. Develops, coordinates and/or provides a variety of non-emergency public education/assistance programs to the local community.
Prepares and conducts special presentations through considerable use of visual aids, to private and civic organizations on Department's EMS program to include rescue capabilities, available equipment, and service levels provided. Functions as a member of the department's management team as required by the Fire Chief and/or designee. Communicates with hospital management regarding extended wait times for Rescue units to ensure effective deployment of resources.
Performs all other duties as assigned. CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE Extensive knowledge of modern fire suppression and prevention and emergency medical services principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
