What is an automotive service writer?

As an automotive service writer, you work at a vehicle service center, and your primary responsibilities are to inspect customer vehicles, such as light trucks and cars, to determine their working condition and then calculate how much any necessary repairs would cost. Your job duties include talking to the customer to find out what needs to be repaired, conducting visual inspections of a vehicle’s engine and other systems, and writing a report of your findings to include a list of recommended services and repairs. You can also find automotive service writer jobs at government agencies and corporations that own large fleets of vehicles. Car dealerships with automotive service departments hire automotive service advisors as well.

How does an automotive service writer typically collaborate with technicians and customers during the repair process?

An Automotive Service Writer acts as the communication bridge between customers and technicians. They gather detailed information about vehicle issues from customers, relay this information clearly to technicians, and keep both parties updated throughout the repair process. Service Writers also review completed work with technicians to ensure accuracy before explaining repairs and associated costs to customers, ensuring transparency and customer satisfaction. Effective collaboration requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automotive service writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automotive Service Writer, you need a solid understanding of automotive systems, strong customer service skills, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with shop management software, estimating tools, and basic computer systems is typically required. Excellent communication, active listening, and problem-solving abilities help build trust with customers and collaborate effectively with technicians. These skills ensure smooth workflow, accurate service documentation, and high customer satisfaction in a fast-paced automotive environment.

Position Overview:

At ProFix Automotive Services, we’re not your typical auto shop.

We’re a fast-growing, startup-style automotive service business built on one simple mission: honest service, clear communication, and earning trust for life.

From oil changes and diagnostics to major repairs and inspections, our team delivers transparent, high-quality automotive care with no shortcuts and no surprises.

You'll run the front of the house: greeting clients, managing the schedule, writing estimates, and keeping our technicians moving efficiently through the day. If you love people, thrive on organization, and want to be the glue that holds a busy shop together, we want to meet you.

Responsibilities:

  • Wow every customer: greet clients warmly, listen to their concerns, and set clear expectations from check-in to pickup

  • Own the front desk: answer phones, manage walk-ins, and keep the lobby running smoothly

  • Run the schedule: book appointments, manage shop capacity, and keep the day's flow tight so nothing falls through the cracks

  • Build estimates: translate technician diagnostics into clear, accurate written estimates customers can trust

  • Keep techs on track: communicate priorities, relay customer approvals quickly, and help the shop hit its daily targets

  • Follow through: update customers on job status, explain invoices, and handle payment and pickup

    Requirements:

  • Strong phone presence – you enjoy talking to people
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced, startup environment
  • Positive, solutions-first attitude
  • Clear communicator who builds trust quickly
  • Comfortable with scheduling software / basic computer systems
  • Automotive service writer, dealership front desk, or similar customer-facing experience is a plus, but not required

Benefits of Working with Us:

  • Competitive compensation based on your experience ($22-25/hour)
  • Performance-based bonuses tied to shop efficiency & booking targets
  • Monday–Friday schedule (no weekends)
  • Paid Vacation plus Flex Days (used for sick or personal time)
  • Christmas Bonus Days
  • Performance-based bonuses tied to shop efficiency & booking targets
  • Monday–Friday schedule (no weekends)
  • Opportunity to grow with the company & make a real impact
