What is audio book recording?

Audio book recording is the process of narrating and capturing the spoken audio version of a book, typically performed by a voice actor or narrator in a professional studio. The goal is to create a high-quality listening experience for audiences who prefer to consume books audibly rather than through traditional reading. This involves voice narration, sound editing, mastering, and sometimes the addition of music or sound effects. Audio book recording requires clear diction, expressive reading, and technical expertise to ensure the final product meets industry standards.

What are audiobook recording jobs?

Audiobook recording, or audiobook narration, is a career for those with professional speaking training or even those who do not but who nonetheless possess excellent diction and a pleasant speaking voice. When you read an audiobook for a recording, you read in a way in which you narrate the book but also create a distinct voice for each character. You might narrate digital books, print books, papers, provide a voice over, or even dictate notes. Some jobs expect you to perform a script in a certain style while others only request that you merely read a script as written. Generally, your duties and responsibilities remain limited to reading and performing while other teams take care of production and editing.

What are some common challenges faced by audiobook narrators, and how can they be overcome?

Audiobook narrators often face challenges such as vocal strain from long recording sessions, maintaining consistent character voices, and ensuring high audio quality in a controlled environment. To overcome these, narrators should practice proper vocal warm-ups, take regular breaks, and stay hydrated. Additionally, working closely with audio engineers and following a clear script helps maintain consistency and quality throughout the recording. Collaborating with the production team also ensures that any technical or performance issues are addressed promptly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an audio book recording professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in audio book recording, you need strong vocal ability, reading fluency, and a clear understanding of narrative pacing, often supported by training in voice acting or narration. Familiarity with digital audio workstations (DAWs), high-quality microphones, and audio editing software is typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, adaptability, and the ability to take direction help narrators bring stories to life and meet production standards. These skills ensure engaging, high-quality audio books that captivate listeners and satisfy publishers’ expectations.

What is the difference between Audio Book Recording vs Voice Over Artist?

While both roles require strong vocal abilities and recording experience, Audio Book Recording is specialized in narration for books, whereas Voice Over Artists work across diverse media formats.

How much do audio book recorders get paid to record an audiobook?

Audio book recorders typically earn between $50 and $400 per finished hour of audio, depending on experience, the project's complexity, and the publisher. Rates can vary widely, with professional narrators often earning higher fees, especially for high-profile or lengthy projects.

Job description

Job Description:

POLITICO is seeking an experienced Senior Producer to help launch and shape a new audio and video show exploring the technologies, ideas and innovations poised to reshape politics, policy and power.

This is an opportunity to partner closely with our host to define a new editorial franchise for POLITICO. You'll work across every aspect of the show - from identifying the ideas worth exploring and booking world-class guests to writing scripts, overseeing recordings, editing episodes and helping grow the audience. We're looking for someone who enjoys moving seamlessly between big-picture editorial thinking and hands-on production.

This is a role for someone who enjoys helping shape an editorial product from idea to impact. You'll help define the show's editorial vision while also rolling up your sleeves each week to make it happen. On our team, there's no separation between "creative" work and "production" work. The same person who helps decide what conversation should happen is often the person who sets up the microphones, shapes the edit and helps make sure the episode reaches its audience. If that kind of ownership excites you, you'll thrive here.

Our shows are multiplatform products, with audio, video and social media elements. Experience producing across those formats-and identifying smart ways to adapt and grow journalism for different audiences-is a strong plus. As the show's cadence and scope evolve, this role may be dedicated primarily to this production or split time across additional POLITICO audio and video projects.

Who You Are:

  • An experienced producer with a track record of creating exceptional audio and/or video journalism.
  • Intellectually curious, with a genuine fascination for emerging technologies and the ways they will reshape politics, policy and society.
  • A strong editorial thinker who loves identifying original ideas, asking smart questions and turning complex subjects into compelling conversations.
  • Equally comfortable developing a show's editorial vision and executing the production work that brings it to life.
  • Someone who thrives in a small, collaborative team where everyone contributes across the production process.
  • Experienced producing across multiple platforms, with an understanding of how podcasts, YouTube and social video work together to build audience.
  • A collaborative partner who enjoys working closely with hosts, reporters and editors while bringing your own ideas to the table.

What You'll Do:

  • Help define and evolve the editorial vision for a new POLITICO show.
  • Research, develop and shape episodes that are intellectually ambitious, deeply reported and accessible to a policy-focused audience.
  • Identify, book and prepare guests from government, industry, academia and beyond.
  • Write episode outlines and scripts that balance editorial rigor with engaging storytelling.
  • Oversee recording sessions, coaching hosts and guests as needed while maintaining a high standard of editorial quality.
  • Edit podcast episodes to a polished final product and, ideally, help oversee or edit companion video versions.
  • Partner with editorial, audience, social and marketing teams to maximize the reach and impact of each episode.
  • Monitor audience performance and continually refine the show's editorial and creative strategy based on what resonates.
  • Help build a distinctive editorial franchise covering the future of technology, politics and policy.

What You'll Need:

  • 6+ years of experience producing podcasts, video journalism or similar editorial programming.
  • Exceptional editorial judgment and strong instincts for identifying original stories and conversations.
  • Demonstrated interest in emerging technology, innovation, science, economics or other future-facing policy issues.
  • Excellent writing skills, including scripting, interview preparation and narrative structure.
  • Strong booking experience and the ability to cultivate relationships with influential guests.
  • Excellent audio editing skills; video editing experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience owning productions end-to-end, balancing editorial leadership with hands-on execution.
  • Outstanding organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple moving pieces on a weekly production schedule.
  • Familiarity with audience analytics and platform metrics to inform editorial decisions.
  • A collaborative, entrepreneurial mindset and enthusiasm for building something new.

Compensation:

  • $100,000-$135,000 Annual Base

The final salary offered will be based on factors including relevant experience, skills, and qualifications.

About Us.

POLITICO illuminates the forces shaping global power. Since 2007, we have delivered intelligence that anticipates tomorrow's headlines, not reports on yesterday's news. As politics has increasingly become the defining force of our era, our work has never been more vital.

Cabinet secretaries and Ministers start their mornings with our analysis. CEOs shape strategy around our reporting. Advocacy leaders rely on our insights to move policy. We deliver the straightforward facts and clear-eyed analysis they need to navigate the most complex political landscape of our lifetimes.

Our 1,100+ publishing professionals across the world's key democratic capitals-Washington, Brussels, London, Paris, Berlin, Sacramento, and New York-form the world's premier politics and policy newsroom. We tell the story of how power really works by explaining who wields it and how they plan to exercise it, connecting dots others miss and delivering scoops from sources others don't even know exist.

Innovation has always been a core tenet of our story. At launch, we bet that depth would trump scale, that talent would trump traffic, and that politics would become central to modern life. In 2011, we made another bet and launched POLITICO Pro to help decision-makers understand the business of government, transforming both how they shape government action and the business of journalism itself.

These bets have made POLITICO the most successful digital news startup of its generation and the indispensable resource for leaders who shape the future. Today, we are a rarity in media: a growing, profitable, and sustainable news organization.

POLITICO is a subsidiary of Axel Springer SE, a family-owned transatlantic media company headquartered in Berlin and New York. Axel Springer is dedicated to shaping the future of journalism in the free world, believing that a free and informed society is essential to democracy.Learn more about Axel Springer.
