Department Summary
Founded in 1960, the Robert D. Clark Honors College (CHC) is a top public honors college known for its innovative curriculum, excellent advising and mentoring, and commitment to liberal arts education. The CHC's interdisciplinary core education curriculum and personalized mentorship provide students with a foundation built on writing and communication-intensive coursework. Courses are conducted as seminars, allowing for vibrant intellectual discussions, unique opportunities for pedagogical innovation, and rich faculty-student interactions and learning. All students complete an honors thesis, supported by faculty mentors. CHC students and faculty are curious, enthusiastic, and committed to making a positive impact on the world. Located in Eugene, Oregon-an hour from both the Pacific coast and the Cascade mountains, the CHC offers students a small liberal arts honors college experience within the cutting-edge resources of a Research 1 institution.
Position Summary
CHC Visiting Instructors teach seven undergraduate courses per year. They design and teach both disciplinary and interdisciplinary liberal arts courses that spark intellectual curiosity across fields of inquiry and support undergraduate advising. Area of specialization within the social sciences is open but should add new areas to our curriculum and not duplicate our current course offerings. The CHC welcomes applicants for the position of visiting instructor from all disciplines within the social sciences, especially candidates with interdisciplinary teaching experience, who can teach a broad range of courses that extend across traditional disciplines. We strongly encourage applicants who have worked with students from a variety of majors and backgrounds.
Minimum Requirements
Visiting faculty positions are intended for those who hold a similar or relevant appointment at another institution or who have recently obtained a terminal degree and are seeking further professional experience prior to seeking a professorship.
Additionally, candidates must have:
• Ph.D. or other terminal degree in social science discipline
• Evidence of teaching excellence
Professional Competencies
• Inclusive, engaged, research-informed, and professional teaching at the college level
• Ability to teach classes that are made up of a wide range of majors
• Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds
• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff in a multi-disciplinary work environment
• Ability to contribute to the CHC through their understanding of the barriers facing first-generation students, people of color, LGBTQ individuals, people with disabilities, and other members of groups underrepresented in higher education (including DACA students), as evidenced by professional, life experiences and/or educational background
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience teaching writing and communication
• Experience teaching core education or introductory courses in a liberal arts context
• Experience with undergraduate advising and research mentoring
