To thrive as an Associate Trust Officer, you need a solid understanding of trust administration, estate planning, and financial regulations, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. Familiarity with trust accounting software, fiduciary management systems, and relevant industry certifications such as the Certified Trust and Fiduciary Advisor (CTFA) are often required. These skills are crucial for effectively managing complex trust relationships, maintaining compliance, and delivering high-quality client service.

What are Associate Trust Officers?

Associate Trust Officers are entry- to mid-level professionals who assist in administering trust accounts and supporting the management of estates, trusts, and other fiduciary relationships. They work under the supervision of senior trust officers, ensuring that accounts are managed in accordance with legal requirements, client instructions, and company policies. Their duties often include reviewing account documents, coordinating with attorneys and beneficiaries, and helping to resolve client inquiries. This role is commonly found within banks, trust companies, and financial institutions.

What are some common challenges an Associate Trust Officer might face when managing multiple client accounts simultaneously?

As an Associate Trust Officer, balancing the needs and expectations of multiple clients can be a significant challenge. Each client may have different types of trusts, unique family dynamics, and varying investment goals, requiring strong organizational and communication skills. Staying compliant with regulatory requirements while coordinating with legal, investment, and tax professionals also adds complexity. Effective time management and attention to detail are essential to ensure that all fiduciary responsibilities are met accurately and timely.

  • Evaluate discretionary distribution requests and provide fiduciary guidance that balances beneficiary needs, trust objectives, tax considerations, and long-term wealth preservation.
  • Partner with investment officers and advisors to ensure assets are prudently managed while identifying and mitigating fiduciary, operational, and regulatory risk.

Business Development & Relationship Management

  • Leverage trust, wealth, and regional market expertise to develop new fiduciary and investment relationships, primarily within the Quad Cities area, but also in our Stateline Market (Roscoe, IL and Beloit, WI).
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to high-net-worth clients, beneficiaries, attorneys, accountants, and financial advisors, delivering tailored trust and wealth solutions.
  • Collaborate with internal bank partners to provide integrated client solutions and generate cross-referrals.
  • Build and maintain strong referral networks with Quad Cities-based centers of influence and meet business development objectives established by the Senior Trust Officer.

Community Engagement & Professional Presence

  • Represent CBI Bank & Trust within the Quad Cities community by supporting initiatives that address the fiduciary, financial planning, and legacy needs of individuals and families.
  • Maintain active participation in nonprofit, professional, or civic organizations, preferably in leadership roles.
  • Participate in client, community, and educational events to enhance visibility and strengthen client and referral relationships.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for trust and wealth management at community or professional engagements as requested.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; BS/BA preferred
  • CFTA or equivalent trust and wealth designation required
