Job Description

This Assistant Controller role supports the Chief Accounting Officer and leads the day-to-day accounting operations for a high-volume, multi-entity retail environment. The position oversees core accounting functions, drives process improvements, supports month-end and year-end close, and serves as a key leader across financial reporting, compliance, audit coordination, and team management.

Responsibilities

  • Lead daily accounting operations across financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, audit support, and tax compliance.
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, management reports, variance analyses, reconciliations, and closing entries.
  • Oversee external financial and sales/use tax audits and serve as a primary point of contact for auditors.
  • Provide hands-on leadership for a large accounting team, including mentoring, coaching, performance management, and prioritization of department workflows.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting procedures, and written policies while identifying and implementing process improvements.
  • Partner cross-functionally with operations, purchasing, advertising, real estate, e-commerce, and store leadership to support business needs and initiatives.
  • Support periodic physical inventory activities and help standardize reporting tools, analytics, and templates for the broader accounting function.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership of accounting teams.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
  • Proven experience building and maintaining accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with ERP systems.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including lookups, queries, and pivot tables.
  • Hands-on experience with financial statements, journal entries, general ledger, accounts receivable, and broader accounting operations.
