Job Summary:

The Operations Supervisor is responsible for monitoring the status of all plant systems on a continuous basis. The Operations Supervisor responds to alarms by taking appropriate corrective actions, directing his team (proficient leadership skills) and executes plant shut-down/start-up and Emergency Operating procedures as required. The Operation Supervisor assures that the plant meets its generating requirements while operating in a safe and efficient manner.

Job Functions:

  • Report upset conditions or other anomalies in plant status to the Operations Manager and Owners. Make entries in the Operating Log and approve and issue Lock out Tag out, LOTO as required.
  • Communication between Springdale and BETM for plant dispatch orders and requests from PJM
  • Operate control panels to regulate the load on the HRSG and turbines and to maintain proper steam temperature and pressure, feedwater and fuel supply and efficient combustion conditions.
  • Perform emergency operations (procedure usage and development) to maintain electric service and safeguard station equipment. Provide direction to OpTechs to effect changes in plant conditions and chemistry.
  • The Operations Supervisor operates from established and well-known procedures under general directions and minimum supervision. Decisions are made within prescribed operating and casualty procedures and guidelines. The Operations Supervisor encounters recurring work situations of high complexity with occasional variations from the norm.
  • The Operations Supervisor has the authority to control the operation of the plant, and must do so in a safe manner resulting in no accidents, in compliance with all environmental permits NERC related permits at all times.
  • The Operations Supervisor must effectively communicate information to plant leadership team and fellow plant personnel, relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance, and provide suggestions for plant improvements. Communicate the Plants daily availability and any other risks to generation during the morning production meeting including Safety, Environmental, Production, Maintenance and be able to discuss any risk to the day ahead Operations.
  • The Operations Supervisor must perform duties in such a way to result in an optimum cost benefit ratio for the Owners.
  • All employees have the responsibility to both the customer and their co-workers to do the job right the first time and to ensure the customer's needs are being met.
  • The Operations Supervisor provides work direction to, as well as performance oversight of, the OPTechs. The Operations Supervisor may also give direction to maintenance personnel on matters pertaining to emergent plant operations.

Education and Experience:

  • Ability to understand procedures, write procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school.
  • Minimum of two years of experience as an Assistant Plant Operator or equivalent position in an operating or generating plant required.  
  • Preferred experience in combined cycle plant operations.
  • Associate Degree in a technical field desirable.
  • Must successfully complete the Operations Supervisor qualification card and Board Review.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must possess basic math skills, good verbal communications skills, and be proficient with the use of power and precision tools.
  • Must be cooperative with those he/she contacts in this work and have the ability to work without direct supervision.
  • Must know the hazards involved and the safety precautions to be practiced in the operation and maintenance of power plant equipment and machinery.
  • Work within and insure strict adherence to all safety practices and procedures.
  • Must be able to respond to audio alarms and variations of sound.
  • Basic data entry/computer skills
  • Work as a team. Must be able to pool our knowledge and energy to work in tandem to completely understand and productively respond to all of the business challenges.

Work Environment:

  • Protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, high voltage protective equipment and other equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties.
  • Work with hazardous materials may be required.
  • Requires working extended working hours, varied shifts or 12 hour shifts with weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions.  On call status (day and night) may be required.
  • Includes working indoors and outdoors

Physical Abilities:

  • Physical requirements include: possibility of working on feet for extensive periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing; and routinely lifting 50 pounds.
  • All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a postoffer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
  • Must be able to work in elevated areas, confined spaces and in extreme heat and cold condition
