About the Opportunity:

Assistant Gallery Manager | $60k - 65k annual salary, paid hourly; overtime eligible

David Zwirner seeks an Assistant Gallery Manager at its New York locations. This role will report to the Gallery Manager and support the Front Desk team by serving as the first point of contact for day-to-day gallery operations, providing real-time support to all NYC gallery locations, and setting the standard for the daily rhythm of the team.

Candidates must be diligent, extremely organized, and possess excellent time management and communication skills.

What you'll do:

  • Ensure the FD team follows essential daily protocols, including opening and closing, arming and disarming the building, daily readiness, adherence to SOPs and confirming that galleries are ready to receive visitors each day.
  • Ensure daily coverage is met; adjust the schedule and reassign GAs as needed in response to call-outs or shifting daily needs, reassigning staff as needed.
  • First responder to real-time problems (security, emergencies, feedback, visitor problems, security, logistics) as they arise, particularly those involving members of the public. Escalates issues when beyond day-to-day scope.
  • Attend and support all onsite programming, openings, and events, responding to any real-time needs.
  • Oversee and track key gallery memberships, subscriptions, and accounts.
  • Maintain supply inventories essential to staff operations including, tracking supplies, managing inventory, and executing approved spending.
  • Coach the GA team by providing real-time guidance, feedback, and course correction throughout the day to support front desk performance. Reinforces training in practice to ensure team understanding.
  • Onboard, oversee, and train Gallery Assistants and Sales Interns, providing guidance and support to ensure they contribute effectively to daily operations, gain valuable experience, and ensure smooth integration.
  • Collaborate with Facilities/Ops to coordinate maintenance requests or operational improvements by communicating immediate needs and feedback to relevant teams.
  • Ad hoc projects as needed.

What we would like you to have:

  • 2+ years of experience as a gallery assistant or administrative support role at a gallery.
  • BA in Art History, Art Business, Humanities, or related field.
  • Knowledge of DZ artists, exhibitions, and collections, and the ability to discuss artworks confidently with visitors, collectors, and artists.
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • Focused, reliable, and exacting attention to detail.
  • Professionalism and discretion.
  • Strong attention to detail, initiative, and problem-solving skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability.
  • Strong multi-tasking skills with the ability to prioritize and anticipate needs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to manage internal and external email correspondence and cross-departmental communication.
  • Passion for and knowledge of contemporary art, and a genuine interest in arts and culture.
