Job Description

The National Planning Manager is responsible for leading the national planning function based in Lutterworth, overseeing the creation, optimisation, and resourcing of transport and warehouse plans across the entire ASDA depot network. The role ensures the safe, efficient, and cost-effective movement of stock throughout the supply chain, including the flow of products from National Pick Centres to regional food depots.

The role has overall accountability for the planning systems, processes, and tools that enable efficient logistics operations, driving system development, continuous improvement, and the delivery of key operational performance indicators.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop the national planning team responsible for transport and warehouse planning across the ASDA logistics estate.
  • Create and maintain resource plans that balance service, cost, capacity, and productivity across all depots.
  • Manage the end-to-end planning of stock movements from National Pick Centres to food and distribution depots, ensuring product availability and operational efficiency.
  • Own and develop the transport planning systems used across the logistics network, ensuring they remain fit for purpose and support changing business requirements.
  • Lead the development and continuous improvement of planning technology, driving enhanced functionality, automation, accuracy, and operational performance.
  • Provide governance and support for transport systems across the logistics function, ensuring effective utilisation, compliance, and operational consistency.
  • Deliver key operational KPIs, including: Driver utilisation Vehicle fill and load optimisation Double-deck trailer utilisation Fleet productivity and capacity utilisation Transport cost efficiency Service and availability measures
  • Optimise network efficiency through effective planning of resources, routes, fleet deployment, and warehouse capacity.
  • Work closely with Logistics Operations, Supply Chain, Commercial, Retail, and Technology teams to ensure planning solutions support business objectives.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce cost, improve service, and increase network productivity through data-driven decision making and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Lead operational planning for periods of peak demand, promotional activity, seasonal events, and network change programmes.
  • Ensure planning activities comply with all legal, safety, and regulatory requirements.

  • Delivery of driver, fleet, and network utilisation KPIs.
  • Optimisation of stock flow between National Pick Centres and regional depots.
