JOB TITLE: Assistant Director, Intercultural Center

DEPARTMENT: Student Development and Activities

TITLE TO WHICH POSITION REPORTS: Director of Student Development and Activities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION:

The Assistant Director of the Intercultural Center (the IC) provides leadership for the day-to-day operations, programs, and initiatives that advance cultural literacy and belonging throughout the student community. Reporting to the Director of Student Development and Activities, the Assistant Director serves as the primary administrator of the IC and is responsible for implementing strategic priorities, managing programs and resources, evaluating program assessment, and serving as a key campus partner in support of student success.

The IC fosters social awareness, cultivates meaningful community connections, and deepens intercultural understanding by equipping students with the awareness, knowledge, and skills needed to engage respectfully and effectively across differences. Through a dynamic, multi-modal learning framework, the IC creates spaces for dialogue, reflection, and growth—recognizing, respecting, and affirming the perspectives, experiences, and contributions of all members of the community. In addition, the IC strengthens institutional capacity and community resources to encourage the success and well-being of first-generation and international students.

As the sole professional staff member in the IC, the Assistant Director plays a critical role in advancing the IC’s mission through collaboration, innovation, and effective identity-based and intercultural programming. The Assistant Director contributes to the ongoing development of the IC, by identifying emerging student needs, supporting strategic planning efforts, cultivating partnerships across campus and in the community, and championing initiatives that advance intercultural learning and student belonging.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Proven effectiveness in designing and assessing identity- and community-based educational initiatives;
  • A strong commitment to student development and success;
  • Exceptional collaboration and communication skills;
  • The ability to lead and inspire various teams; and
  • A record of effective engagement with internal and external stakeholders.

The Assistant Director serves as a visible and trusted representative of the IC, supporting dialogue, connection, and excellence across the community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated experience in program coordination, leadership development, and/or student engagement
  • Experience supervising student staff, interns, and/or the demonstrated capacity to assume staff supervision as the role evolves.
  • Experience with community resourcing and a demonstrated understanding of related public policy landscape is highly preferred.
  • Specific experience in providing direct services to historically underrepresented young adults in an urban, multicultural, and global environment preferred.
  • Experience supporting organizational change, program growth, or new initiatives is desirable.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Operational Leadership (30%)
Oversee the daily administrative and operational functions for spaces and programs under the IC’s purview. Responsibilities include managing the IC’s operating budget, coordinating space usage, supervising and mentoring student employees, and designing and implementing outreach and social media strategies that engage students and amplify global and intercultural experiences.

Program Leadership (30%)
Develop, implement, and assess educational programs, services, and initiatives aligned with the IC’s mission. Establish clear learning outcomes and assessment frameworks to inspire continual improvement. Advance evidence-based and student-centered programming that fosters intercultural competence and belonging for all learners.

Stakeholder Engagement (15%)
Develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with campus and community organizations, alumni relations, and other stakeholders to expand the impact of key programs and services. Strengthen cross-campus and global network collaborations that enhance student success. Coordinate with campus offices to support students through referral pathways and shared initiatives that promote well-being and success.

Committee Leadership (15%)
Serve as an active member of divisional, institutional, and cross-functional committees dedicated to the design, implementation, and evaluation of signature initiatives and special projects.

Other Duties (10%)
Provide evening and weekend support as needed in alignment with institutional priorities and perform other responsibilities as assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education administration, or other relevant field required.
