Purpose

  1. To assist in instructing dancers in the fundamental skills, choreography, technique, and physical conditioning necessary to achieve individual and team success.
  2. To support the development of responsibility, teamwork, sportsmanship, self-discipline, leadership, and self-confidence through participation in dance.

Summary

The Assistant Dance Coach supports the Head Dance Coach in all aspects of the dance program, including instruction of student-athletes, choreography preparation, practice supervision, and competition support. The Assistant Dance Coach helps maintain a positive and inclusive team environment while ensuring compliance with all school, conference, and MSHSL policies. The Assistant Dance Coach reports directly to the Head Dance Coach and High School Activities Director.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Assist with the planning and implementation of all aspects of the dance program.
  • Support instruction in dance technique, choreography, performance quality, and competition preparation.
  • Assist with developing routines appropriate for student skill level and competition standards.
  • Promote positive team culture, spirit, sportsmanship, and morale.
  • Teach and reinforce proper technique, conditioning, and safety procedures.
  • Help maintain discipline in a firm, fair, and supportive manner.
  • Assist with organizing and supervising structured practices and rehearsals.
  • Supervise student-athletes during practices, performances, competitions, and travel as assigned.
  • Support the management and care of costumes, equipment, and music resources.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and coaching staff.
  • Reinforce expectations and program philosophy established by the Head Coach.
  • Assist with coordinating team events, performances, and recognition activities.
  • Serve as a positive role model and representative of St. James Public Schools and the community.
  • Follow all district, conference, and MSHSL policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Dance Coach or Activities Director.
