AS400 Computer Operators are IT professionals responsible for managing and maintaining IBM AS400 (now IBM iSeries or IBM Power Systems) computer systems. Their duties typically include monitoring system performance, running batch jobs, performing backups, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, and ensuring the smooth operation of the AS400 environment. They may also handle user account management, respond to alerts, and coordinate with other IT staff to resolve issues. This role is critical for organizations that rely on AS400 systems for business operations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an AS400 computer operator?

To thrive as an AS400 Computer Operator, you need solid experience with IBM iSeries (AS400) systems, a good grasp of operating system commands, and often an associate degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with job scheduling software, backup and recovery tools, and knowledge of monitoring systems like Robot or HelpSystems is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for managing system alerts and collaborating with IT teams. These skills ensure smooth system operations, minimize downtime, and help maintain business continuity for critical IT infrastructure.

What are the most common challenges faced by AS400 computer operators, and how can they prepare for them?

AS400 Computer Operators often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting system errors, managing scheduled batch jobs, and ensuring minimal downtime during system maintenance.
