Archival Digitization Remote information

What are some common challenges faced by remote archival digitization professionals, and how can they be managed?

Remote archival digitization professionals often encounter challenges such as handling diverse formats of historical materials, ensuring consistent digital quality, and maintaining clear communication with onsite archivists. Managing these challenges typically involves using standardized digitization protocols, employing reliable scanning equipment and software, and utilizing collaborative tools for project tracking and feedback. Proactive communication and regular virtual check-ins with the team also help address issues promptly and maintain project alignment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Archival Digitization Remote Specialist, and why are they important?

Success in an Archival Digitization Remote role requires attention to detail, familiarity with archival standards, and experience handling historical materials, often supported by a degree in library science or archival studies. Proficiency with digitization hardware (such as scanners and cameras), digital asset management systems, and metadata standards like Dublin Core is typically essential. Strong organizational skills, self-motivation, and effective remote communication help individuals excel in this independent, accuracy-driven position. These skills ensure the preservation, accessibility, and integrity of digital archives, which are critical for both current and future information needs.

What is archival digitization remote work?

Archival digitization remote work involves converting physical archival materials, such as documents, photographs, and records, into digital formats from a remote location. Professionals in this field use specialized scanners, digital cameras, and software to create accurate digital copies, ensuring the preservation and accessibility of historical and valuable information. Remote archival digitization allows organizations to expand their preservation efforts without requiring on-site staff, making it more flexible and accessible. This work often requires attention to detail, knowledge of metadata standards, and secure handling of sensitive information.

What is the difference between Archival Digitization Remote vs Archival Technician?

AspectArchival Digitization RemoteArchival Technician
CredentialsTypically requires digital imaging or archival certification, sometimes a degree in library science or related fieldOften requires high school diploma or associate degree, with on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentRemote, digital-focused tasks, using specialized software and scannersOn-site in archives or storage facilities, handling physical materials
Industry UsageCommon in digital preservation, libraries, and museumsCommon in physical archives, libraries, and historical societies

In summary, Archival Digitization Remote roles focus on digitizing and preserving materials remotely using digital tools, while Archival Technicians work on-site handling physical archives. Both roles support archival preservation but differ mainly in work environment and required skills.

Together Group brings together specialist expertise across branding, visualisation, communications, and digital experience, giving Imerza access to an unparalleled network of talent and resources to deliver transformative outcomes for clients globally.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all GIS technical deliverables across multiple projects, ensuring timely, high-quality outputs aligned with client requirements and company standards.
- Oversee the full GIS workflow, from data acquisition and processing to final integration into immersive environments.
- Maintain strict adherence to standardised data structures, schemas, naming conventions, and metadata protocols for all geospatial datasets.
- Develop, implement, and enforce best-practice GIS data management policies to ensure consistency, accuracy, and scalability.
- Perform advanced geospatial data processing, cleaning, transformation, and quality assurance using ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar platforms.
- Prepare and optimise GIS datasets (vector, raster, elevation/DEM, 3D features, and attribute data) for ingestion into Unreal Engine.
- Utilise Unreal Engine tools and plugins (e.g. ArcGIS Maps SDK for Unreal Engine) to import, geo-reference, and integrate GIS data into real-time 3D environments and digital twins.
- Collaborate closely with Unreal Engine developers, 3D artists, and visualisation teams to troubleshoot geospatial integration issues (coordinate systems, scale, precision, performance optimisation).
- Ensure geospatial accuracy, coordinate reference system alignment, and visual fidelity when translating GIS data into Unreal Engine scenes.
- Manage version control, backups, and archiving of GIS datasets to support project iteration and long-term asset reuse.
- Document GIS processes, data pipelines, and Unreal Engine ingestion workflows to facilitate team knowledge sharing and onboarding.
- Identify and implement opportunities to automate GIS-to-Unreal data pipelines for increased efficiency on large-scale projects.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior GIS team members on data standards, Unreal integration techniques, and project-specific requirements.
- Research and source GIS datasets to support world-building teams.
- Stay current with advancements in GIS technologies, game-engine geospatial tools, and emerging best practices for immersive digital twin development.

- Proven senior-level experience in GIS data management, processing, and analysis.
- Deep proficiency with ArcGIS, QGIS, or comparable GIS platforms.
- Hands-on experience integrating GIS data into Unreal Engine, including familiarity with the ArcGIS Maps SDK for Unreal Engine or similar geospatial game-engine plugins.
- Strong understanding of coordinate reference systems, projections, and geospatial accuracy requirements.
- Experience preparing and optimising vector, raster, DEM/elevation, and 3D feature datasets for real-time 3D environments.
- Ability to develop and enforce data standards, schemas, and documentation across teams.
- Experience with pipeline automation and scripting (Python or similar) for GIS data workflows.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills
- comfortable working cross-functionally with 3D artists, developers, and project managers.
- Experience managing and mentoring junior team members.
Nice to Have:
- Background in real estate, architecture, urban planning, or related property development industries.
- Familiarity with digital twin platforms and immersive visualisation pipelines.
- Experience with game engines beyond Unreal Engine (e.g. Unity).
- Knowledge of BIM data and its integration with GIS environments.
What We Offer
- A globally distributed, collaborative team at the cutting edge of immersive technology.
