What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Architectural Associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architectural Associate, you need a solid understanding of architectural design principles, drafting, and building codes, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in architecture or a related field. Proficiency with tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and Adobe Creative Suite is essential, and LEED accreditation or other certifications can be advantageous. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate effectively with clients and multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualifications ensure you can contribute to innovative, compliant designs and successful project delivery.

How does an Architectural Associate typically collaborate with senior architects and other team members during a project?

As an Architectural Associate, you will work closely with senior architects, engineers, and other design professionals throughout all phases of a project. Your responsibilities often include preparing drawings, conducting research, and attending project meetings to ensure that designs meet client requirements and regulatory standards. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as you’ll be expected to provide input, incorporate feedback, and coordinate with multiple stakeholders to keep projects on track. This collaborative environment provides valuable learning opportunities and helps you build relationships that are important for career advancement in the field.

What are Architectural Associates?

Architectural Associates are early-career professionals who support architects in designing, planning, and overseeing the construction of buildings and structures. They typically assist with drafting plans, creating 3D models, conducting research, and preparing project documentation. While they often have a degree in architecture or a related field, they may still be working toward licensure. Architectural Associates gain practical experience under the supervision of licensed architects, helping them develop the skills necessary to advance in the field. Their role is crucial for ensuring projects meet design standards, codes, and client needs.

Job description

Thornton Tomasetti applies engineering and scientific principles to solve the world's challenges. An independent organization of creative thinkers and innovative doers collaborating from offices worldwide, our mission is to bring our clients' ideas to life and, in the process, lay the groundwork for a better, more resilient future. We provide support and opportunities to our employees to achieve their full potential and cultivate a rewarding career.
Our Forensic practice investigates problems in the built environment and provides evidence-based solutions founded on rigorous science and physics. We assist attorneys, property managers, building owners, contractors, manufacturers, and design professionals with a wide range of engineering and architectural issues.
The Role
We're excited to offer an immediate opportunity for a Forensic Architect who is passionate about uncovering how buildings perform, solving complex problems, and contributing to high-impact forensic and litigation work. This is a unique chance to blend architectural expertise with investigation, analysis, and design of repairs and retrofits-while partnering with industry-leading experts.
In this role, you'll get the opportunity to independently lead architectural investigations of existing buildings, assess conditions, and develop creative repair strategies. You'll dive into building code analyses, fire-rated assemblies, building envelope performance (roofs, facades, and more), and cause-and-origin evaluations. You'll also collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, help guide junior staff, support business development efforts, and build meaningful client relationships.
Responsibilities
  • Lead independent assessments of building envelopes, fire-rated construction, and other architectural systems-including cause-and-origin investigations.
  • Observe and document field testing protocols; prepare materials used in litigation support.
  • Analyze building codes, industry standards, and construction documents; design innovative, practical repairs for deficient conditions.
  • Mentor and review work from junior staff; contribute to drafting construction documents, condition assessments, and order-of-magnitude cost estimates.
  • Communicate directly with clients to understand project needs, present findings, and prepare persuasive, well-supported reports and presentations.
  • Prepare technical and investigative reports that clearly articulate forensic findings.
  • Opportunity to testify in arbitration, deposition, or trial.

Requirements
  • Degree (Master's preferred) in Architecture or Architectural Engineering.
  • Professional License required.
  • 8+ years of experience preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to travel within the US and internationally.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD; Revit experience is a plus.

Benefits
Depending on your employment status, benefits may include:
  • Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, AD&D, Disability and other voluntary benefits
  • Flexible Spending Accounts for Medical & Childcare
  • Paid Time Off, Family Leave for New Parents, Volunteer Time
  • Tuition Reimbursement
  • Commuter Transit (where available)
  • 401k retirement savings with Company matching on employee contributions and/or qualified student loan repayments
  • Fitness Reimbursement
  • And other various wellness, diversity/inclusion and employee resource programs and initiatives
