What Do Architects Do?

Architects are licensed professionals who design buildings. It is the job of an architect to oversee the development of a project from its initial vision to completed construction. They must adhere to building codes and safety regulations, while simultaneously satisfying the expectations of the clients who contract them. Architects touch every aspect of a building. They meet with clients to assess all fundamental requirements and restrictions for the project, and afterward create and draw up the initial concept and design. These proposed plans will include every detail of the building, from structural design to electrical systems to exterior aesthetics. There may be several iterations between an architect and a client before the final design is solidified. Once the plan is set, an architect often assists the client with acquiring a construction crew, and may even frequent the building site of that project to ensure that timelines and quality standards are being met. Throughout a project, an architect is instrumental in the selection of the building site, cost analysis prep and budgeting plans, and mediation between the construction crew and the client. It is the responsibility of the architect to make sure that everything runs smoothly and the vision is carried out correctly and efficiently.

What kind of jobs can an architect have?

An architect can work in various roles such as design architect, project manager, urban planner, landscape architect, or construction manager. They often collaborate with engineers, contractors, and clients, and may specialize in residential, commercial, or industrial projects, using tools like CAD software and requiring relevant licensure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architect, you need a solid background in architectural design, building codes, and construction methods, typically supported by a professional degree in architecture and state licensure. Proficiency with CAD/BIM software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, along with knowledge of project management tools, is essential. Strong creativity, communication, and problem-solving skills help architects collaborate effectively and address client needs. These competencies ensure that architects can design safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing structures while meeting regulatory and client requirements.

What are some common challenges architects face when working on large-scale projects?

Architects working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, managing tight deadlines, and ensuring compliance with building codes and client specifications. Effective communication is crucial, as architects must regularly collaborate with engineers, contractors, and stakeholders to address design changes and resolve issues. Balancing aesthetic vision with functional and budgetary constraints is also a frequent hurdle, requiring creative problem-solving and adaptability throughout the project's lifecycle.

What does an architect do?

An architect is a professional who designs buildings and other structures, ensuring they are functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasing. They work closely with clients to understand their needs and create plans that meet building codes and regulations. Architects also collaborate with engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders throughout the construction process to oversee the project and make adjustments as needed. Their work involves a mix of creativity, technical knowledge, and project management skills.

Are you an experienced architect ready to take ownership of meaningful commercial, multifamily, mixed-use, and hospitality projects? A respected, design-focused architecture firm is seeking a talented Project Architect to join its Dallas team and help lead projects from concept through construction.

This is an opportunity to work in a collaborative studio environment where your technical knowledge, leadership ability, and design coordination skills will directly shape high-quality projects across Texas and beyond.

Why This Role Stands Out

You will join a team that values strong design, technical excellence, and long-term career growth. The firm offers the opportunity to work on complex, high-value projects while collaborating with experienced architects, designers, consultants, and development professionals.

Benefits may include:

  • Competitive compensation
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Retirement plan options
  • Professional development support
  • Collaborative team culture
  • Career advancement opportunities
  • Exposure to large-scale, high-impact projects in Dallas

What You’ll Do

As a Project Architect, you will help manage and coordinate architectural project efforts to ensure successful execution from early design through construction administration. You will serve as a key technical leader while working closely with project managers, designers, consultants, and internal leadership.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead the development and coordination of architectural drawings, models, and construction documents.
  • Manage project documentation using Revit/BIM workflows.
  • Coordinate with consultants, engineers, interior designers, and regulatory authorities.
  • Support conceptual, schematic, design development, and construction document phases.
  • Perform code research and coordinate documentation with applicable building codes.
  • Help prepare schedules, specifications, meeting records, and project documentation.
  • Participate in QA/QC reviews and ensure technical accuracy across deliverables.
  • Support permitting, pricing, value engineering, and construction administration efforts.
  • Track project decisions, lessons learned, ASIs, change orders, and consultant coordination items.
  • Mentor junior team members, modelers, and drafters as needed.

This Project Architect role is ideal for someone who enjoys both technical leadership and hands-on project delivery.

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate is a licensed architect with strong technical skills, excellent communication abilities, and experience managing complex architectural documentation.

Qualifications include:

  • 8+ years of architectural experience as a Project Architect.
  • Registered Architect license required.
  • Experience with multifamily, mixed-use, hospitality, or private commercial development preferred.
  • Experience with projects ranging from approximately $40M to $125M is highly valued.
  • Strong knowledge of wood-frame design, Type III, and Type V construction is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD required.
  • Experience with Bluebeam, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Project preferred.
  • Ability to create and manage short-term and long-range project work plans.
  • Strong understanding of BIM execution, project documentation, and construction administration.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and deadline-management skills.
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and professional team-first mindset.

Who This Is For

This opportunity is a strong fit for a licensed architect who wants to take on more ownership, work on meaningful projects, and grow within a collaborative firm that values both design and technical execution.

The right candidate will be comfortable coordinating complex project details, working with cross-functional teams, and helping bring high-quality architecture to life in Dallas.
