What is architecture?

Architecture is the art and science of designing and constructing buildings and other physical structures. It involves creating functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasing environments that meet the needs of individuals and communities. Architects consider factors like site conditions, materials, building codes, sustainability, and client requirements when designing spaces. The field encompasses a wide range of projects, from residential homes to commercial complexes and public infrastructure.

What are some common challenges architects face when collaborating with multidisciplinary teams on large projects?

Architects often work closely with engineers, contractors, and clients, which can present challenges such as aligning design visions, managing communication, and resolving conflicts over technical or budgetary constraints. Successfully navigating these dynamics requires strong interpersonal and negotiation skills, as well as adaptability to incorporate feedback from various stakeholders. Being proactive in coordinating meetings, using collaborative design tools, and maintaining clear documentation can help streamline the process and ensure project goals are met efficiently.

What is the difference between Architecture vs Civil Engineering?

AspectArchitectureCivil Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Architecture, licensing requiredBachelor's or Master's in Civil Engineering, licensure often required
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, client meetings, construction sitesConstruction sites, design offices, infrastructure projects
Industry UsageDesigning buildings and spacesDesigning infrastructure like bridges, roads, and buildings

While both architects and civil engineers work on building projects, architects focus on the design and aesthetics of structures, ensuring functionality and visual appeal. Civil engineers handle the structural integrity, safety, and infrastructure aspects. Both roles often collaborate during construction, but their core responsibilities and credentials differ.

Are Architects in Demand?

Some architects, particularly naval architects and marine engineers, are in high demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for naval architects is growing at a rate of 12%, which is faster than average. The demand is due to an increased need for building ships and marine natural resource delivery systems, such as pipelines, whose structure needs to meet more rigorous environmental standards. Other architecture careers are growing about as fast as average, and the space for employment is based largely on the health of the construction industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architect, you need a strong background in design principles, spatial planning, and building codes, typically supported by a professional degree in architecture and relevant licensure. Proficiency with CAD software, BIM tools like Revit, and knowledge of sustainable design certifications such as LEED are commonly required. Outstanding communication, creativity, and project management skills help architects collaborate with clients and multidisciplinary teams. These abilities are crucial for delivering functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasing buildings that meet client needs and regulatory standards.

Salt Lake City, UT • On-site

Full-time

Job description

Overview
VCBO Architecture is seeking a Senior Architect to lead design and delivery on impactful projects across a range of sectors, including sacred and institutional work. This role is ideal for a design- and technically-strong leader who enjoys guiding teams, shaping project vision, and contributing to a collaborative, design-focused studio culture.

You’ll work with a high level of autonomy, mentor staff, and help advance design quality and best practices across the firm—particularly on projects that require care, continuity, and a deep respect for architectural tradition.

About VCBO
VCBO is an award-winning architecture firm based in downtown Salt Lake City. Our work spans education, civic, healthcare, religious, and commercial projects, with a focus on strengthening communities through thoughtful design.

We are especially committed to work that carries long-term cultural and spiritual significance, including sacred architecture rooted in classical principles, craftsmanship, and enduring design values.

We value mentorship, professional growth, and balance, and support a studio culture that’s both design-driven and genuinely human (yes, including a 9/80 option and the occasional office dodgeball game).

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead design, technical direction, and documentation for complex architectural projects
  • Contribute to and uphold principles of classical architecture, proportion, materiality, and detailing where appropriate
  • Mentor and guide interdisciplinary teams, supporting both design excellence and technical rigor
  • Coordinate closely with clients, consultants, and internal staff to align design vision, execution, and long-term goals
  • Oversee quality and consistency from concept through construction, with careful attention to design intent
  • Represent the firm in presentations and stakeholder meetings, fostering trust-based client relationships
  • Contribute to firmwide design standards, technical initiatives, and best practices

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture
  • 10+ years of professional experience
  • Architectural licensure preferred, but not required
  • Experience or strong interest in classical, traditional, or sacred architecture
  • Strong Revit proficiency; familiarity with additional design and BIM tools a plus
  • Strong communication skills, with comfort presenting to clients and stakeholders
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and manage complex work with professionalism and discretion
