Application Packaging Engineer information

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Application Packaging Engineers typically do not earn $500,000 annually; such high salaries are more common in executive or specialized roles within the tech industry. Highly experienced engineers in senior or leadership positions, especially in large companies or with advanced skills, may reach this level, but it is uncommon for standard application packaging roles. Compensation depends on factors like location, company size, and individual expertise.

Is packaging engineering in demand?

Packaging engineering is in demand due to the need for efficient, sustainable, and innovative packaging solutions across industries such as manufacturing, logistics, and consumer goods. Application Packaging Engineers, who specialize in software packaging and deployment, are also sought after as organizations modernize their IT infrastructure and require expertise in automation tools like SCCM and scripting skills. Overall, both traditional and IT-related packaging roles are experiencing growth driven by technological advancements and industry standards.

What does a packaging engineer do?

A packaging engineer designs and develops packaging solutions for products to ensure safety, durability, and compliance with industry standards. They analyze materials, create prototypes, and collaborate with manufacturing teams, often using CAD software and testing methods to optimize packaging performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Application Packaging Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Application Packaging Engineer, you need expertise in software deployment, scripting (such as PowerShell or VBScript), and a strong understanding of Windows operating systems, often supported by a relevant degree or certification like Microsoft Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate. Familiarity with packaging tools such as SCCM, InstallShield, AdminStudio, and virtualization technologies is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this position. These skills ensure applications are reliably packaged, tested, and deployed, minimizing disruptions and maintaining efficient IT operations.

What are common challenges faced by Application Packaging Engineers when preparing software for deployment across diverse environments?

Application Packaging Engineers often encounter challenges related to ensuring compatibility across various operating systems, hardware configurations, and user permission levels. Troubleshooting installation failures and managing dependencies—especially when applications have specific prerequisites or interact with legacy systems—can be complex. Additionally, maintaining clear communication with end-users and IT teams is critical, as feedback and testing cycles are essential for successful deployment. Staying updated with evolving packaging tools and automation technologies also plays a key role in addressing these challenges effectively.

What is the difference between Application Packaging Engineer vs Software Deployment Specialist?

AspectApplication Packaging EngineerSoftware Deployment Specialist
Primary FocusCreating, testing, and maintaining software packages for deploymentImplementing and managing software deployment processes across systems
Skills & CertificationsKnowledge of packaging tools (e.g., SCCM, InstallShield), scripting, OS environmentsDeployment tools, scripting, network configuration, system administration
Work EnvironmentIT teams, software development, system administrationIT operations, system administrators, support teams
Industry UsageIT, software companies, large enterprisesIT, enterprise organizations, managed service providers

While both roles involve software management, Application Packaging Engineers focus on creating and maintaining software packages, whereas Software Deployment Specialists handle the deployment and implementation of these packages across systems. Both roles often collaborate but serve different stages of the software lifecycle.

What is an application packaging engineer?

An application packaging engineer is a professional who creates, tests, and maintains software packages for deployment across computer systems. They use tools like SCCM or InstallShield to ensure applications are installed, updated, and uninstalled efficiently in enterprise environments. Strong knowledge of scripting, operating systems, and software deployment processes is essential for this role.

The KEB America team is growing-and we're looking for an Application Engineer who wants more than a traditional engineering role. In this position, you'll work directly with customers to solve real-world challenges, apply advanced mechanical brakes and clutch technologies, and build your skills in both engineering and technical sales.

This is a unique opportunity to see your work in action-from concept through implementation-while developing expertise in working with a wide range of OEMS-original equipment manufacturers.

Requirements

What You'll Do

You'll play a key role at the intersection of engineering, customer solutions, and business growth:

  • Partner with OEMs and system integrators to design and apply mechanical clutch and brake solutions in automated systems
  • Work directly with customers to solve technical challenges and deliver tailored solutions
  • Size, select, and recommend products that optimize performance and reliability
  • Support product startups and commissioning by visiting customer sites (up to ~20% travel)
  • Create technical documentation, specifications, and engineering work orders
  • Provide ongoing troubleshooting and technical support
  • Develop sales quotes, presentations, and forecasts to help grow the business
  • Lead product training sessions and share application expertise internally and externally

Experience We Seek:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills-you can translate technical concepts into customer-friendly solutions
  • Interest in customer interaction and technical sales
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate across teams

Nice to have:

  • Experience in automation, motion control, or industrial equipment
  • Exposure to customer-facing engineering or application engineering
