What does an analyst do?

An Analyst is a professional who collects, processes, and interprets data to help organizations make informed decisions. Their responsibilities often include researching trends, preparing reports, and providing insights that guide business strategies. Analysts work in various fields such as finance, marketing, operations, or data analysis, and use specialized tools and software to analyze information. They play a key role in identifying opportunities for improvement and supporting the decision-making process within a company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Analyst, you need strong analytical thinking, quantitative skills, and a relevant degree such as in finance, business, or data science. Familiarity with data analysis tools (like Excel, SQL, or Python), business intelligence platforms, and sometimes certifications such as CFA or CAP are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for presenting insights and collaborating with stakeholders. These skills are crucial for transforming complex data into actionable strategies that drive informed business decisions.

How do analysts typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Analysts often work cross-functionally, collaborating closely with teams such as finance, marketing, operations, and IT to collect data, understand business needs, and provide actionable insights. This collaboration usually involves regular meetings, data sharing, and joint project work to ensure that analyses align with organizational goals. Effective communication and teamwork are key, as Analysts must translate complex data findings into clear recommendations for non-technical stakeholders. Building strong relationships with other departments helps Analysts stay informed about business priorities and deliver more impactful results.

What analyst makes the most money?

Senior-level analysts in specialized fields such as financial, data, or management analysis tend to earn the highest salaries, often exceeding $100,000 annually. Factors like industry, experience, certifications, and location influence compensation levels significantly.

What degree does an analyst need?

An analyst typically needs at least a bachelor's degree in fields such as business, finance, economics, statistics, or related areas. Some roles may require or prefer a master's degree or professional certifications like CFA or CPA, especially for advanced or specialized positions.

What is an entry level analyst?

An entry-level analyst is a professional starting their career in data analysis, business analysis, or similar fields. They typically have limited work experience, often require a bachelor's degree, and use tools like Excel or basic data software to support decision-making and reporting tasks.

Job description

Atrium Home Services is seeking a driven Analyst to join our Finance team. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent Accounting or Finance graduate or someone with 1–3 years of experience looking to build a career in corporate finance.
THIS POSITION WILL SIT ONSITE IN GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN. THIS IS NOT A REMOTE POSITION.

About Atrium:

Atrium Home Services is a multi-brand residential home services platform operating trusted HVAC, plumbing, and electrical companies across the Midwest. Our family of brands includes Service Professor, Great Dane Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electrical, Anderson Heating, Cooling & Plumbing, Anton's Plumbing, Heating/Cooling & Energy Experts, and Duane Blanton Plumbing, Sewer, Heating & Cooling.

Atrium is committed to operational excellence, customer experience, and building high-performing teams that drive long-term growth across every market we serve.

Position Overview:

This role partners closely with Operations, Pricing, and trade-level leadership to ensure every job is costed accurately, every labor hour is captured, and the organization is staffed to execute its plan; neither over-invested in idle capacity nor under-resourced to meet customer demand. Beyond job costing and workforce planning, the Analyst will monitor and actively refine cash flow forecasting, build financial reporting decks, gather business commentary, and prepare financial reports for internal and external stakeholders, while supporting ad hoc analysis and partnering across departments to turn data into action. The position requires strong analytical rigor, excellent communication, and a deep understanding of job-level cost behavior.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Oversight

  • ·         Monitor the day-to-day accounting operations of the operating entities, including general ledger, direct materials, payroll, fees, revenue recognition, deferred revenue, inventory, fixed assets, prepaids and accruals (including supplier rebates).
  • ·         Partner closely with trade managers, operations and FP&A to ensure accurate, timely and insightful financial reporting.
  • ·         Assist with month-end close and reporting process, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and adherence to deadlines.
  • ·         Support integration of acquired companies

Capacity & Operating Plan Execution

  • ·         Translate AOP revenue and EBITDA targets into labor capacity requirements and monitor actual headcount and hours against plan.
  • ·         Develop staffing and capacity scenarios that balance demand, utilization, and margin
  • ·         Establish and report direct-labor utilization, productivity, cost per hour, and physical vs. equivalent headcount against plan to operations and finance leadership.

Financial Analysis & Reporting

  • ·         Conduct root-cause variance analysis and provide actionable recommendations to close gaps to plan.
  • ·         Deep dive into day-to-day transactions within the General Ledger, starting with Direct Materials and SG&A invoices to provide transparency of actuals vs. plan.
  • ·         Support the budgeting and forecasting process with bottoms-up models driven by Leads, Calls, Operational KPIs, and Marketing allocation impact to determine Annual Operating Plan and execution path.
  • ·         Streamline reporting and strengthen data integrity using Sage Intacct and related workforce and operational systems in Service Titan.
  • ·         Assist in forecasting and analysis, identifying key drivers, variances, and risks to liquidity.
  • ·         Assist in building financial reporting decks, gathering business commentary, and preparing financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.

Strategic Partnership

  • ·         Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, FP&A, HR, and brand leadership to align labor and capacity plans with business goals.
  • ·         Partner with peers across geographic areas to drive consistency and enhance financial visibility.
  • ·         Responsibilities and duties may change at any time with or without notice.

Qualifications:

  • ·         Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance preferred.
  • ·         Recent graduate or 1–3 years of experience in finance, accounting, FP&A, public accounting, or a related analytical role.
  • ·         Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • ·         Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • ·         Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • ·         Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • ·         Experience with ERP systems or financial reporting software is a plus (Sage Intacct experience preferred but not required).

Compensation & Benefits:

  • ·         Salary: $68,000–$78,000 annually, based on experience.
