Job description

The United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore (UWLES) is seeking a Half-Time AmeriCorps member for the 2026-2027 service year.

UWLES focuses on advancing health and wellness, educational success, and financial security for all Lower Shore residents. Fall 2026 begins their 82nd year of local service across Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester counties.

UWLES is the Volunteer Center for the Lower Shore and has other direct programs such as Imagination Library, Read to Succeed, ALICE initiative, holiday outreach programs, and the Addiction Awareness Art Competition. Affinity groups (Women United, Emerging Leaders, and Student United Way) offer engagement and volunteer opportunities for anyone wanting to get involved. UWLES collaborates with PACE/SU and Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore for the annual Lower Shore Nonprofit Summit and provides other professional development and capacity building opportunities for local nonprofits. UWLES’ impact is extended through funding and support for about 40+ nonprofit partners annually.

The member would support both the Community Impact and Development teams.

Member Responsibilities:

  • Provide support and outreach for the Get Connected Volunteer Center to include:
    • promoting nonprofit and public use of the free volunteer connection website to advance regional volunteerism
    • providing training for nonprofits on the site's volunteer management tools
    • supporting community-wide volunteer events, such as the Maryland Folk Festival and the Governor's annual month of service initiative in January 2026.
    • assisting with social media and/or marketing projects related to volunteerism
  • Provide support and outreach at community events for other direct programs such as Imagination Library, affinity groups, reading programs and resource connections
  • Perform data analysis for impact assessment
  • Provide support for affinity group volunteering and events
  • Provide support for UWLES fundraising and donor/volunteer recognition events/outreach
  • Additional projects and team support will be available based on interests and skills.

Requirementsfor applicants include the following:

  • Have a strong interestin serving the community
  • Be able to relate to diverse populations
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Able to provide copy of either high school diploma, GED, or college transcript
  • Have reliabletransportation
  • Be available to attend the free, AmeriCorps class at SU alternate Thursdays, 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., during the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Must successfully pass a comprehensive Criminal History Check, which includes FBI fingerprinting
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or lawful permanent resident alien
  • Applicants DO NOT need to be college students, anyone from the community who fits the above requirements may participate.

  • An education award of $3,697 for future educational expenses or repayment of federal student loans - members who are age 55 or older may gift their ed. award to a child or grandchild
  • Federal student loan forbearance while in service, with exemption from paying interest accrued during that time
  • 8 tuition-free credits at Salisbury University for completion of training course
  • Access to AmeriCorps Alumni Network
  • Provided by UWLES - Reimbursement at standard mileage rate for local work-related travel

Member’s hours will mostly be served during typical office hours, which are 8:30-5:00 M-F. However, some evening and/or weekend hours may be requested for events or community outreach. Member’s schedule will be based on their availability.Flexibility will be provided when evening/weekend help is needed. The UWLES office is located at 803. N.
