AmeriCorps YouthBuild Project
The HANDY AmeriCorps Program engages opportunity youth ages 16-24 in Broward County, Florida, to achieve economic stability and self-sufficiency through education, workforce training, and national service. Members ages 17+ gain valuable leadership, academic, and career skills while directly contributing to their communities through service and civic engagement. Through two key service pathways, YouthBuild Workforce Development and Housing Rehabilitation. AmeriCorps members participate in hands-on construction training, academic tutoring, life-skills development, and community service projects. Members help rehabilitate affordable housing units for low-income families while completing GED coursework and earning industry-recognized credentials such as OSHA, NCCER, or Florida Ready to Work. Full-time members lead outreach and volunteer engagement efforts, while part-time members support direct construction and peer mentorship activities. All members receive professional development, AmeriCorps training, and wraparound support services including transportation assistance, food access, housing referrals, and job placement resources to promote success during and after service. HANDY AmeriCorps creates lasting community impact by increasing the availability of affordable housing, reducing youth unemployment, and improving educational outcomes. The program aligns with Volunteer Florida's mission to strengthen communities through service and helps participants build a foundation for long-term success as skilled workers, engaged citizens, and future community leaders.
Member Duties : HANDY AmeriCorps members will serve opportunity youth ages 16-24 through education, workforce training, and community service. Members engage in two primary service pathways: YouthBuild Workforce Development, where they provide tutoring, academic coaching, mentoring, and job readiness workshops; and Housing Rehabilitation, where they gain hands-on construction experience repairing and renovating affordable homes for low-income families. Full-time members lead outreach, volunteer coordination, and partner engagement, while part-time members focus on direct service and skill-building. All members participate in structured training, life-skills development, and leadership activities that prepare them for employment, post-secondary education, and lifelong civic engagement.
