What is an Ama?

Ama are traditional Japanese female free divers who are known for collecting seafood such as abalone, seaweed, and pearls from the ocean floor without the use of breathing equipment. The practice dates back over 2,000 years and is especially famous in coastal regions such as Mie and Shima. Ama divers typically hold their breath for up to two minutes at a time while diving, and many continue working into their 60s and 70s. This unique profession is both a cultural tradition and a means of livelihood for many women in Japan.

Building a solid plan for question selection and having contingency steps for common technical glitches can greatly enhance the flow and success of AMAs.
