How much do aircraft reliability engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for aircraft reliability engineer in the United States is $117,973.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $102,500.00 and $129,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an Aircraft Reliability Engineer?

As an Aircraft Reliability Engineer, your daily responsibilities usually include collecting and analyzing maintenance and performance data, identifying trends in component failures, and recommending improvements to enhance aircraft reliability. You will regularly collaborate with maintenance teams, fleet managers, and technical departments to develop preventive maintenance plans and optimize spare parts usage. A portion of your time may also be spent preparing detailed reliability reports for regulatory compliance and management review. This role offers a mix of hands-on problem-solving and strategic planning, ensuring both operational integrity and safety for airline operations.

What does an Aircraft Reliability Engineer do?

An Aircraft Reliability Engineer is responsible for analyzing and improving the reliability, safety, and maintainability of aircraft systems. They collect and analyze operational data to identify trends, optimize maintenance programs, and reduce downtime. Their work involves collaborating with maintenance, engineering, and operations teams to ensure compliance with industry regulations and enhance overall fleet performance. By identifying potential failures and implementing preventive measures, they help improve aircraft safety and efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Aircraft Reliability Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Aircraft Reliability Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, data analysis, and statistical modeling, typically supported by a degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering. Expertise with reliability analysis software (like ReliaSoft or SAGE), maintenance tracking systems, and applicable regulatory certifications such as FAA Part 145 is crucial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate within multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure that aircraft remain safe, operational, and cost-effective while meeting stringent industry standards.

What language do pilots speak?

Pilots typically speak English as the standard language for international and domestic flights, regardless of the airline or country. Proficiency in English is often required for certification and communication with air traffic control, which is essential for roles like an Aircraft Reliability Engineer to understand technical documentation and safety procedures. Clear communication is critical in aviation safety and operations.

What country flies the most?

As an Aircraft Reliability Engineer, understanding the largest aviation markets is useful; the United States has the highest number of commercial aircraft flights annually, followed by China and India. These countries have extensive airline networks and high flight frequencies, making them key regions for aircraft maintenance and reliability work.

What not to eat before flying?

Aircraft Reliability Engineers should avoid consuming heavy, greasy, or spicy foods before flying to prevent gastrointestinal discomfort that could impair focus and safety during inspections or maintenance tasks. Staying hydrated and eating light meals helps maintain alertness and physical readiness in the aviation environment.

Is Angelina Jolie a licensed pilot?

Angelina Jolie is not known to be a licensed pilot. Aircraft Reliability Engineers typically do not require pilot licenses unless their role involves flying aircraft for testing or operational purposes, which is uncommon in their standard responsibilities.

Skyways

Austin, TX

Full-time

Job description

Skyways designs, builds, and operates fully autonomous long-range cargo aircraft. Founded in 2017, the company has spent the last eight years developing and deploying autonomous logistics systems for real-world operations.

Our V2 aircraft carries 30 lbs up to 500 miles, while our next-generation V3 carries 100 lbs over 1,000+ miles with 20+ hours of endurance. Both use a hybrid-electric architecture that takes off like a helicopter and cruises like a plane, enabling long-range autonomous delivery without traditional runway infrastructure.

Today, Skyways aircraft operate across three continents in controlled national airspace under FAA oversight and in support of U.S. military operations. We are transitioning from prototype development to full-rate production and scaling toward large autonomous cargo fleets.

Backed by Y Combinator and a $37M AFWERX STRATFI award from the U.S. Air Force, Skyways is creating a new form of transportation to advance our civilization from Austin, Texas.

The Opportunity

Skyways is hiring a Senior Reliability Engineer to lead technical investigations and drive closure of reliability issues across our active V2 and V3 aircraft fleets.

In this role, you will serve as the technical owner for Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) activities. You will work closely with Flight Test, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, Manufacturing, and Operations teams to investigate failures, validate corrective actions, and improve fleet reliability.

If you enjoy solving difficult technical problems, digging through flight data, working hands-on with hardware, and collaborating across multiple disciplines to improve real-world aircraft performance, this is for you!

What You'll Do:
  • Lead the RCCA Lifecycle: Own the end-to-end investigation process for fleet reliability issues, from initial intake and root-cause analysis through to implementation, validation, and permanent closure.

  • Drive Data-Driven Insights: Analyze complex flight logs, telemetry, manufacturing, and maintenance data to identify systemic reliability trends and recurring failure modes.

  • Collaborate Across Disciplines: Partner with Flight Test, Manufacturing, Software, and Engineering teams to reproduce anomalies, conduct hands-on investigations, and deploy corrective actions.

  • Communicate & Document Findings: Author technical reports and RCCA documentation suitable for engineering reviews, leadership, and regulatory needs, ensuring clear communication of engineering decisions.

  • Improve Fleet Health: Proactively contribute to reliability metrics, continuous improvement initiatives, and design feedback loops to ensure lessons learned improve future aircraft performance.

What You'll Bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

  • 7+ years of engineering experience in aerospace, defense, autonomous systems, robotics, aviation, automotive, or other safety-critical industries.

  • Strong troubleshooting and systems-level problem-solving skills across hardware, software, and operational environments.

  • Experience applying investigation methodologies such as 8D, 5-Why, Fishbone, Fault Tree Analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), or similar approaches.

  • Strong technical writing and communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate findings to engineers, leadership, customers, and external stakeholders.

  • Comfortable working hands-on with aircraft hardware, instrumentation, test equipment, and troubleshooting activities.

  • Proficiency with Python, SQL, or similar tools for data analysis and trend identification.

Bonus Points:
  • Experience supporting unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), autonomous vehicles, or aviation platforms.

  • Familiarity with ArduPilot, PX4, MAVLink, DroneCAN, or comparable flight-control ecosystems.

  • Experience investigating avionics, GPS, navigation, communications, propulsion, power-system, battery, or flight-control issues.

  • Experience with reliability engineering practices such as FRACAS, MTBF analysis, reliability growth tracking, and fleet health monitoring.
