Description
The Conflict Intervention Service is supported by grant funding from the Mayor's Office on Housing and Community Development of the City and County of San Francisco and uses the spectrum of conflict resolution supports and mediation to resolve conflict that causes housing destabilization and eviction. CIS works as a neutral service provider to support both housing providers and residents in affordable and supportive public housing and landlords and tenants in privately owned dwellings; the program also work with small commercial tenants and landlords to resolve leasing or relational conflicts. CIS also provides education on navigating the landlord-tenant and/or resident community relationships to de-escalate and resolve conflict, allowing for better communication and support to harmonize housing relationships. CIS employs both attorney-mediator and non-attorney mediators, as well as conflict navigators, and works with a roster of qualified mediators who otherwise serve the program as independent contractors, as needed. CIS also has resources for language interpretation.
Community Engagement Mediator, services will include the continuum of mediated services for conflict resolution services and education, and especially when behavioral health resources and trauma informed mediation services are needed by landlords and tenants. Regarding supervision for this position, the Mediator and Resource Specialist works closely with the Program Manager and is supervised by the BASF ADR Director.
EDUCATION:
  • Certificated mediator or equivalent
  • Familiarity with rules, regulations and policies in public housing
  • Familiarity with landlord-tenant conflicts
  • Clinical or social services advocacy in San Francisco
  • Specialization as psychiatric mental health nurse, social worker, or comparable education preferred

EXPERIENCE:
  • Experience working with both landlords and tenants
  • Familiarity with housing conflicts and rules, especially in the supportive housing arena
  • Familiarity with mental and behavioral health conditions in a housing context
  • Familiarity with social service work and/or landlord-tenant counseling in housing
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Experience working with people with mental health conditions and/or mental and physical disabilities
  • Experience providing trauma-informed, experiential trainings
  • Experience with crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques
  • Familiarity with the arena of landlord-tenant transactions, such as housing conditions and lease compliance, a plus
  • Familiarity with project management software as well as and Google forms, docs, surveys, etc., a plus
