An administrative law judge (ALJ) oversees administrative hearings for a particular regulatory or benefits agency within the federal government, such as the Social Security Administration or The Department of Labor. Their responsibilities include presiding over administrative cases, administering oaths, hearing testimony, and making judgments. Administrative law judges (ALJs) oversee cases brought to the administration and make impartial rulings.
| Aspect | Administrative Law Judge | Hearing Officer |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Legal degree, bar admission, legal experience | Legal background varies; often legal or administrative experience |
| Work Environment | Courts, government agencies, formal hearing rooms | Government agencies, informal or formal hearings |
| Employer & Industry | Federal, state, or local government agencies | Government agencies, often in social services or regulatory bodies |

ALJs often handle complex legal issues, whereas Hearing Officers focus on specific agency matters.
