Construction Bookkeeping Specialist

Builder Clarity LLC

Durham, NC โ€ข On-site

$32 - $42/hr

Full-time, Part-time, Contractor

Posted 23 days ago

Job description

1099 Independent Contractor | Hybrid | Durham, North Carolina
10 to 20 hours per week | $32 to $42 per hour

Job Snapshot

Builder Clarity is hiring a Construction Bookkeeping Specialist to help construction companies clean up, organize, and improve their bookkeeping systems. This is client-based work and does not include Builder Clarity's internal bookkeeping. The role will begin part time and has the potential to grow quickly.

Applicants must currently live within reasonable commuting distance of Durham, North Carolina. Applications from outside the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill area will be automatically rejected. We are not considering candidates who plan to relocate.

The Role

You will work alongside Builder Clarity operations consultants to review client books, contribute bookkeeping expertise, and implement the structures and workflows developed for each engagement.

Our consultants lead the broader investigation, client relationship, and systems design. You will not be expected to determine every best practice or solve operational issues alone. Your focus will be accurate implementation, clear documentation, and helping client teams successfully maintain the systems we build.

Required client, team, and in-person meeting time is paid; Durham meetings may occur weekly during onboarding and active projects.

The initial 1099 position has no employee benefits and does not include tax, controller, or CPA services.

What You Will Do
  • Assist with reviewing, cleaning up, and organizing client books in QuickBooks Online.
  • Implement approved charts of accounts, products and services, and accounts payable and receivable workflows.
  • Align QuickBooks Online with construction project management systems such as JobTread.
  • Document bookkeeping procedures and help train client team members.
  • Participate in client meetings and explain bookkeeping details when needed.
  • Support recurring client bookkeeping services as that part of the business expands.
  • Raise concerns, inconsistencies, and opportunities for improvement to the operations consultants.
What We Are Looking For
  • Strong bookkeeping fundamentals and practical QuickBooks Online experience.
  • Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and maintain accurate records.
  • Strong attention to detail, professional judgment, and clear communication.
  • Confidence participating in client meetings and explaining bookkeeping workflows in an approachable way.
  • Availability for scheduled client meetings during normal Eastern business hours and required in-person meetings in Durham.
  • Willingness to learn construction accounting practices and software systems.

Construction bookkeeping, job costing, QuickBooks Online cleanup, JobTread, process documentation, client training, and multi-client bookkeeping experience are helpful but not required. Credentials such as QuickBooks ProAdvisor are appreciated but not required. We are open to a strong bookkeeper who is ready to learn the construction-specific knowledge needed for the role.

How to Apply

Please submit your rsum and a cover letter that answers the following questions:

  1. Please describe your experience with QuickBooks Online, including how long you have used it and the types of clients or businesses you have supported.
  2. Tell us about a bookkeeping cleanup or catch-up project you have completed. What condition were the books in, what did you do, and what was the result?
  3. Have you documented a financial process or trained someone to follow a bookkeeping workflow? Please provide a brief example.
  4. How many hours per week are you currently available, and are you able to attend scheduled client meetings during normal Eastern business hours?
  5. What interests you about working with construction companies and being part of Builder Clarity's broader operations and systems consulting work?

Applications that do not meet the location requirement will not be considered.

About Builder Clarity and Growth

Builder Clarity is an operations, systems, automation, and change management partner for construction companies. We connect financial, project management, CRM, production, and administrative systems into clear, documented, and repeatable workflows. Because we work across the client's operations, this role can help address the underlying processes affecting the books, not simply correct transactions afterward.

The initial compensation range is $32 to $42 per hour, based on experience and demonstrated capability. As our bookkeeping scopes become more standardized, we expect to explore mutually agreed production-based compensation options that reward efficient, accurate work, including possible flat project or recurring client portfolio compensation.

This role may grow into full-time hours and could remain a contractor relationship or become an employee position in the future. There is also potential for the right person to help develop a larger recurring bookkeeping service and take on additional responsibility over time.
