How much do acupuncturist jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 30, 2026, the average yearly pay for acupuncturist in the United States is $72,470.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $57,500.00 and $88,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an acupuncturist and what do they do?

An acupuncturist is a healthcare professional who practices acupuncture, a form of traditional Chinese medicine that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. The goal of acupuncture is to promote healing, alleviate pain, and improve overall well-being by balancing the body's energy flow, or 'qi.' Acupuncturists assess patients, develop treatment plans, and may also use other techniques such as cupping or moxibustion. They are often licensed or certified, depending on regional regulations, and work in a variety of healthcare settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Acupuncturist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Acupuncturist, you need a comprehensive understanding of traditional Chinese medicine, anatomy, and physiology, typically supported by a master's degree and state licensure or certification. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, patient management software, and clean-needle techniques is essential for safe and effective practice. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and active listening help build trust and ensure personalized care for clients. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering safe, effective treatments and establishing a loyal client base in a holistic healthcare setting.

What is the difference between Acupuncturist vs Chiropractor?

AspectAcupuncturistChiropractor
CredentialsLicensed acupuncturist certification, often requiring a master's degree in acupuncture or Oriental medicineDoctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree, licensed after completing chiropractic college
Work EnvironmentClinics, holistic health centers, private practicesChiropractic clinics, health centers, private practices
Industry UsageAlternative medicine, holistic health, pain managementMusculoskeletal health, pain relief, physical therapy

While both acupuncturists and chiropractors focus on health and pain relief, acupuncturists specialize in using needles to stimulate specific points for holistic healing, whereas chiropractors primarily manipulate the spine and musculoskeletal system to improve function and reduce pain. Both roles require specialized certifications and often work in similar healthcare settings, but their treatment approaches differ significantly.

Is acupuncture a good career?

Acupuncturists provide alternative healthcare by inserting fine needles into specific points on the body to promote healing and pain relief. The profession requires certification, knowledge of anatomy, and often involves working in clinics or private practices. Job outlook varies by region, with demand influenced by public interest in holistic health and complementary medicine.

What Do Acupuncturists Do?

Acupuncturists are accredited Eastern medicine experts. Their job is to help patients and clients realign their energy flow, or Qi, to promote overall physical wellness. They specialize in addressing both physical and psychological ailments, such as hypertension and anxiety. On a daily basis, Acupuncturists meet with new and returning clients who wish to try alternative treatment options. They review different therapy plans and determine what will benefit the patient’s body most. After this initial meeting, treatment begins. Acupuncturists use tools such as needles, cups, and earballs. One session typically lasts 30-60 minutes. Additionally, an acupuncturist is required to document patient progress and maintain accurate records at all times. The safety and longevity of a client’s physical and psychological well-being is an acupuncturist's main priority.

Where do acupuncturists make the most money?

Acupuncturists tend to earn higher salaries in regions with higher living costs and greater demand for alternative medicine, such as urban areas and affluent communities. States or cities with a strong integrative healthcare presence and higher insurance reimbursement rates also offer better earning potential for acupuncturists.

Can I get acupuncture if I take Eliquis?

Acupuncturists should be aware that Eliquis (apixaban) is an anticoagulant, which can increase bleeding risk during needle insertion. It is important for acupuncturists to review a patient's medication history and consult with their healthcare provider before performing acupuncture on patients taking blood thinners. Proper technique and caution are essential to minimize bleeding complications.

How does an acupuncturist typically collaborate with other healthcare professionals in a clinical setting?

Acupuncturists often work alongside physicians, physical therapists, chiropractors, and other healthcare providers to deliver integrated patient care. Collaboration may involve participating in case discussions, sharing patient progress updates, and coordinating treatment plans to ensure holistic and effective outcomes. This team-based approach not only enhances patient care but also allows acupuncturists to learn from other disciplines and expand their professional network. Effective communication skills and a willingness to educate others about acupuncture are valuable assets in this environment.

Are acupuncturists well paid?

Acupuncturists typically earn a median annual salary that varies by location and experience, with many earning between $40,000 and $80,000. Salaries can increase with advanced certifications, a strong client base, and working in private practice or healthcare settings.

TOP 10 REASONS TO WORK ON BOARD A CRUISE SHIP
There are many reasons to work on board, but here are the reasons most often cited by acupuncturists who work for OneSpaWorld.

  1. The ability to practise acupuncture without investing in the overhead normally associated with starting a practice.
  2. You get a jumpstart on your student loans. With no overhead on board, you will be better positioned to get ahead on your student loans. You have virtually no living expenses – food and boarding are all factored in.
  3. Cruise line guests come from all over the world, and many have not been exposed to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which affords onboard acupuncturists an opportunity to educate the public about TCM and how it can improve their quality of life.
  4. As guests are on vacation, they have the time to explore new treatments and ideas. This means that, acupuncturists working on board a cruise ship can be extremely busy.  Results are often seen immediately as the guests are more relaxed whilst on vacation, so healing is greatly improved in this environment.
  5. Even though acupuncturists are part of a much larger spa team, running your column on board is very much like running your own business. You will give talks, seminars and can introduce as many guests to acupuncture as possible on any given day.
  6. The working environment on board luxury cruise ships is extremely clean and professional making it much easier for you to gain the confidence of guests.
  7. Less down time: As you live and work on board the cruise ship you do not have to factor in travel time to and from work. No cleaning, no grocery shopping, no everyday mundane activities.
  8. An obvious huge perk is travel.  Depending on your itinerary, you could explore the islands of the Caribbean, the Alaskan glaciers, or even the Mediterranean.
  9. Meet and mix with the diverse cultures as embodied by the crew and the guests. Make friends from all over the world.
  10. Save money. You are in unique position where you could actually save every penny you make as your fundamental needs are taken care of on board.
