Theย Senior Accountantย supports the AMCโ€™sย financial operationsย through ownership ofย complexย general ledger accounting, month end closeย activities,ย reconciliationsย and financial reportingย in accordance withย organizational policies and accounting standards. The roleย is responsible forย keyย accounting areas including restricted funds,ย endowment, investments, capital assets, compliance filings,ย andย auditย support, and works cross functionally toย strengthen processes, internal controls and the accuracy and timeliness of financial information.ย 

This position is primarily remote, offering flexibility for candidates throughout New England. Periodic travel is expected for team collaboration, training, and key meetings at AMC's Boston office or New Hampshire locations (Gorham and Bretton Woods). Candidates who prefer more in-person interaction may also choose a hybrid work arrangement based in Boston or Gorham.

What You'll Be Doing at AMC

Core Accounting and Financial Reportingย 

  • Leadย assigned aspects of theย monthly,ย quarterlyย and year endย closeย processes, includingย preparing and/or reviewingย journal entries,ย accruals,ย reconciliationsย and analysesย ย 
  • Support accounting and reporting of revenue across programs and systemsย 
  • Ensure that accounting is performedย in accordance withย organizational policies and proceduresย andย accounting standardsย 
  • Identifyย accounting issues and recommend resolutionsย 
  • Ensure documentation supports audit and controlย requirementsย 
  • Evaluateย accounting workflows andย internal controls; recommend and implement process,ย systemย and technologicalย improvements to increase efficiency,ย accuracyย and consistencyย 
  • Develop and/orย maintainย accounting procedures and documentation for assigned areasย 
  • Manage assigned responsibilitiesย accurately and within established timelines, escalating issues and competing priorities as neededย 

Investmentsย 

  • Manage the investment inbox andย maintainย organized, audit ready investment documentationย 
  • Coordinate the processing, funding, and tracking of capital calls and related investment activityย 
  • Record quarterly investment activity andย maintainย key reconciliations, including investmentย rollforwardsย and investment cash activityย 

Accounting for restricted fundsย 

  • Manage restricted fund balancesย in accordance withย donor intent and record releases from restriction accurately andย timelyย 
  • Coordinate with accounting, development, and program teams to support properย recording andย use of restricted funds and provideย timelyย balance updates to stakeholdersย 
  • Maintain endowment schedules,ย including fundย documentation andย purpose, spending classifications, and allocation of investment incomeย 
  • Supportย and advance effortsย to enhanceย expense trackingย forย allย restricted funds, including grants, andย provide budget managers with meaningful,ย accurateย reportsย 

AMC Publishedย Booksย ย 

  • Record and reconcile monthly accounting activity related to book distribution operationsย 
  • Prepare biannual royalty reports and coordinateย timelyย royalty paymentsย 
  • Maintain book inventory accounting and related reconciliations to ensureย accurateย balances and reportingย 

Capital Projectsย andย Fixed Assetsย 

  • Manage accounting for capital projects, including assigning project codes,ย monitoringย activity, performing reconciliations, andย maintainingย reports for management useย 
  • Maintain the fixed asset ledger and related depreciation schedules, ensuring additions, disposals, and transfers are recorded accurately andย timelyย 

Audit andย Compliance Supportย 

  • Coordinate assigned aspects of the annual financial statement audit, including preparing schedules, responding to auditor requests, and ensuringย timelyย completion of deliverablesย 
  • Prepare supporting schedules and analyses for Form 990ย and other compliance filings, including tracking lobbying activities and related disclosuresย 
  • Prepare and supportย timelyย compliance filings for local, state, and federal agenciesย 

CrossFunctionalย & Operational Supportย Provide guidance,ย trainingย or review support to less experienced accounting staff, as assignedย 

  • Serve as an accounting resource toย development, program, operations, and other departments for assigned areasย 
  • Communicate accounting requirements, deadlines, and fund balance information to internal stakeholdersย 
  • Partner with management to support reporting and analysis needsย 
  • Leverage technology in performance of work and support digital transformation projects, asย requestedย 
  • Perform other projects and duties as assignedย 

What AMC is Looking For

Requiredย 

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree inย accounting, finance,ย or related fieldย 
  • 5+ย yearsย ofย progressivelyย responsible accountingย experienceย ย 
  • Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, month-end close and financial reportingย 
  • Experience withย complexย nonprofit accounting,ย such as restricted funds, endowments,ย andย investmentsย 
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in aย deadlinedrivenย environmentย 
  • Advancedย Excelย skills andย proficiencyย with aย major accounting system (Sage Intacctย preferred).ย 
  • Preferredย 
  • Experienceย workingย in a nonprofit orย missiondrivenย organizationย 
  • Experience supportingย annualย audits, Form 990ย preparationย and other regulatory compliance filingsย

Boston Based: $66,157 - $89,265

Other Northeast Based locations: $57,528 - $77,622

External candidates typically begin their journey with us at the starting point of the salary range.
