Job description

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting for an Accountant. This position is responsible for ensuring accounting treatment is recorded in accordance with GAAP, maintain accurate and reliable financial statements, and establish and maintain internal controls. Conducts financial monitoring to ensure cost efficiency and compliance within the Department's accounting, budgeting and fiscal bureaus. Assists with maintaining the database of MDT assets. This position ensures state compliance with complex federal regulations and establishes goals, objectives and priorities for all accounting functions. Provides technical assistance to division/district financial contacts, budget analysts, and project management to ensure consistent application of policies and procedures. This position is part of a career ladder with career advancement opportunities. This position reports to the Accounting Management Section Supervisor and does not supervise others.

Required Education and Experience:

        Bachelor's degree in Accounting. OR 4 years of related accounting experience in lieu of a degree.  

        1 year of related accounting experience.

        Alternative combinations of related experience or education may be considered. Such as an associate's degree in accounting and 3 years of related accounting experience; OR 5 years of related accounting experience.

This agency may use a training assignment. Employees in training assignments may be paid below the base pay established by the agency pay rules. Conditions of the training assignment will be stated in writing at the time of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of governmental accounting principles and practices, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

Ability to use an advanced and functional knowledge of the financial reporting structure and related accounting systems for assigned program(s).

High proficiency in utilizing Excel to complete work.
