How much do 1099 bookkeeping jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 18, 2026, the average hourly pay for 1099 bookkeeping in the United States is $24.31, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.71 and $27.64 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is 1099 bookkeeping?

A 1099 bookkeeping job refers to a self-employed or independent contractor position where a bookkeeper provides financial record-keeping services to businesses or individuals. Instead of being a W-2 employee, a 1099 bookkeeper manages their own taxes and business expenses. Responsibilities typically include recording transactions, reconciling accounts, preparing financial reports, and ensuring accurate financial records. Many 1099 bookkeepers work remotely and serve multiple clients on a contract basis. This role offers flexibility but requires strong bookkeeping skills and knowledge of accounting software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in 1099 bookkeeping?

To thrive as a 1099 Bookkeeping professional, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, transactional bookkeeping, and experience with managing financial records independently, usually supported by relevant coursework or work experience. Familiarity with bookkeeping software such as QuickBooks, Xero, or FreshBooks and optional certifications like Certified Bookkeeper (CB) are often required. Excellent time management, strong communication, and attention to detail help you build trust with multiple clients and ensure accuracy. These skills are crucial for delivering reliable financial services, maintaining compliance, and effectively managing the responsibilities of self-employment as a contractor.

What are some common challenges faced by 1099 bookkeeping professionals, and how can they be managed?

As a 1099 Bookkeeping professional, you may face challenges like balancing the needs of multiple clients, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of changing tax regulations, and managing deadlines without direct supervision. It’s important to establish clear processes, communicate proactively with clients, and regularly invest time in professional development to stay current on best practices. Using project management tools and robust bookkeeping software can also help streamline your workflow and reduce errors. Successfully navigating these challenges enables you to deliver consistent, high-quality service and build long-term client relationships.

Can a 1099 bookkeeper be a 1099 employee?

A 1099 bookkeeper is typically classified as an independent contractor, which aligns with being a 1099 employee. However, the classification depends on the nature of the work arrangement and IRS guidelines; if the bookkeeper controls their work schedule and supplies their own tools, they are more likely to be considered an independent contractor rather than an employee. Proper classification is important for tax purposes and legal compliance.

Which type of 1099 bookkeeping job pays the most?

1099 bookkeeping jobs that involve working as a freelance or independent contractor for larger clients or specialized industries tend to pay the highest rates. Positions requiring advanced skills in accounting software, tax preparation, or industry-specific knowledge often command higher compensation. Experience, certifications, and the complexity of the bookkeeping tasks also influence pay levels.
