Job description

Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
Vertiv is seeking a Senior Engineering Technician - Root Cause Analysis (RCAR Lab) in Delaware, Ohio to support advanced failure analysis and investigative activities on returned components and systems. This role bridges the gap between a traditional test technician and a failure analysis engineer, combining hands-on lab execution with analytical problem-solving and technical reporting.
This position plays a critical role in supporting Vertiv's Root Cause Analysis (RCAR) program by executing complex test procedures, troubleshooting electrical, mechanical and thermal systems, and contributing to data-driven failure investigations. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical aptitude, ownership, and curiosity, with the ability to grow into a more advanced engineering-level analysis role over time.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform detailed failure analysis and root cause investigations on returned components and systems to identify failure modes and contributing factors
  • Execute and refine laboratory test procedures, methods of procedure (MOPs), and validation testing to generate accurate, repeatable, and traceable data
  • Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, thermal, and electro-mechanical assemblies using schematics, drawings, instrumentation, and system knowledge
  • Collect, analyze, and document failure data to support RCAR conclusions and technical reporting
  • Partner closely with engineering to evaluate failure hypotheses using structured methodologies (5-Why, Fishbone, FMEA, etc.)
  • Support development of technical reports and contribute to customer-facing RCAR deliverables
  • Operate and maintain advanced lab equipment and test systems (oscilloscopes, data acquisition systems, power quality analyzers, etc.)
  • Support advanced analysis techniques such as X-ray, FTIR, SEM, or coordinate with internal/external labs as needed
  • Own day-to-day lab operations including equipment readiness, calibration tracking, organization, and 5S activities
  • Manage multiple concurrent investigations, ensuring timelines, priorities, and deliverables are met
  • Interface with cross-functional teams including engineering, field service, quality, product, and suppliers
  • Support continuous improvement of lab processes, test methods, and investigation efficiency
  • Participate in product training and develop deeper system-level understanding of Vertiv technologies
  • Contribute to building RCAR capability, documentation standards, and knowledge sharing across the team

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in testing, troubleshooting, or technical analysis roles
  • Strong hands-on experience with electrical and/or mechanical systems
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex systems and interpret schematics and technical documentation
  • Experience using laboratory instrumentation (oscilloscopes, data loggers, power analyzers, etc.)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in failure analysis, root cause analysis, or investigative engineering environments
  • Background in UPS systems, power distribution, thermal systems, or similar industries
  • Familiarity with structured problem-solving methodologies (8D, FMEA, Six Sigma, Kepner-Tregoe)
  • Experience supporting or contributing to technical reports or customer deliverables
  • Exposure to advanced analysis methods (SEM, X-ray, materials analysis, etc.)
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)

Key Attributes for Success
  • Strong ownership mindset and ability to operate with minimal supervision
  • Curiosity and drive to understand not just what failed, but why
  • Ability to bridge hands-on testing with analytical thinking
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, investigative environment
  • Desire to grow into a more advanced engineering / failure analysis role

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (BSEE) field is a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to conduct a single person 35-pound physical lift.

TRAVEL TIME REQUIRED
  • 10%
