What is an engineering manager?

Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for leading and overseeing engineering teams within an organization. They coordinate projects, manage team members, allocate resources, and ensure that engineering goals align with company objectives. Their role often involves a combination of technical expertise, leadership, and administrative skills to deliver successful engineering solutions on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering manager?

To thrive as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and leadership, typically with a degree in engineering and prior technical experience. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), version control systems (like Git), and potentially certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for successfully leading technical teams, delivering projects on time, and aligning engineering output with organizational goals.

How does an engineering manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

At Advance CNC Machining, we specialize in producing high precision machined parts for customers from coast to coast including equipment manufacturers, food, drug and the aerospace and defense industries. We believe in getting the right people in the right seats so we can fulfill our mission to create more opportunities for our families and our neighbors.

What You’ll Do

As our Engineering Manager, you’ll serve as both a strategist and a mentor—guiding our engineering team to create custom deliverables that exceed expectations- while modeling the accountability, resourcefulness, and humility that define our culture.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing, coaching, and developing a high-performing team of mechanical engineers
  • Leading performance management, including goal setting, feedback, and professional growth planning
  • Optimizing engineering workflows to increase throughput, reduce waste, and streamline handoffs with production teams
  • Troubleshooting design issues with an analytical, solutions-oriented approach
  • Owning the Engineering group’s performance indicators and budget

Compensation package includes:

  • 401k plan with a generous 100% employer match up to $5,200 per year
  • 80 hours of paid time off (PTO) your first year, increasing annually up to 200 hours.
  • 6 paid holidays
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, accident, and disability insurance coverage options
  • Christmas bonus opportunity
  • Other bonus opportunities

What You Bring

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager with the proactivity, determination, and commitment to excel in a fast-paced and growing manufacturing environment.

The skills needed:

  • 10+ years of combined experience in design engineering
  • Deep understanding of machining and related manufacturing processes
  • Experience leading and mentoring direct reports including excellent communication and the ability to hold others accountable.
  • Strong analytical skills for diagnosing design or production challenges
  • Ability to guide engineers through concept development, 3D modeling, prints, tolerances, and manufacturability reviews
  • A mindset focused on efficiency, quality improvement, and cost savings
  • Demonstrated SolidWorks experience and fluency
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering (or similar) is preferred.

Why Advance CNC?

We’re a refreshingly different, growing company of 50+ team members where ordinary people do extraordinary things.

  • We value humility, determination, and teamwork.
  • We invest in leading-edge technology and taking care of people.
  • We’re committed to quality, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
  • Here, your work directly supports the success of our customers and our company.

Successful pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check are conditions of employment.
