Job description

Health Information Technician

We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized Health Information Technician to support the front medical office and health information functions. The ideal candidate will have strong administrative skills, scheduling experience, knowledge of medical terminology, and the ability to maintain accurate and confidential patient records.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide administrative support in a medical office setting, including scheduling and coordinating appointments.
  • Compile and review health information to ensure medical reports and records are complete and accurate.
  • Review patient charts to ensure required reports, documentation, and signatures are present.
  • Prepare charts for new admissions and complete required health information forms.
  • Prepare requests for specific medical reports, records, or certificates.
  • Type and maintain health information forms, reports, and correspondence.
  • Compile and prepare statistical reports, including daily and monthly census, Medicaid days, admissions, discharges, and length of stay.
  • File medical reports and documentation accurately within health information records.
  • Maintain logs and retrieve health information records from filing systems.
  • Provide information from health records when requests are determined to be appropriate and authorized.
  • Coordinate with other departments regarding health information procedures and medical record requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information and follow applicable medical record-keeping requirements.
  • Proofread medical reports and identify missing, incomplete, or inaccurate information.

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong administrative and organizational skills.
  • Front medical office experience.
  • Previous scheduling experience.
  • Experience working with medical records or health information preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and medical record-keeping requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to recognize missing information and identify errors in medical documentation.
  • Excellent filing, data entry, proofreading, and record-keeping skills.
  • Proficiency with word processing software and basic office equipment.
  • Ability to gather, organize, classify, and maintain information accurately.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with patients, medical staff, and other departments.

Preferred Knowledge

  • Health information technology and medical record procedures.
  • JCAH and Medicare/Medicaid requirements related to medical record keeping.
  • Confidentiality requirements governing patient health information.
  • Medical terminology and healthcare documentation practices.
