Job description

Position Summary

Beyond Camp includes Before Care, After Care, and Swim programs designed to support families with childcare needs outside of regular Discovery Day Camp and Adventure Day Camp hours.

  • Before Care: 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
  • After Care & Swim Lessons: 3:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

The Beyond Camp Lead serves as the primary leader for a multi-age group during Before Care or After Care. Leads work under the direction of the Beyond Camp Coordinators to create a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment that meets the developmental needs of campers.

Before Care focuses on calm, structured activities that help campers ease into their day. After Care emphasizes active engagement, outdoor play, choice-based activities, and opportunities to unwind after a structured camp schedule.

This role supports the mission of Columbus Academy Summer Experience by fostering a safe, inclusive, and adventurous learning community grounded in our Viking Values of Safety, Respect, Honesty, and Belonging.

Program Leadership Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement daily activities appropriate for a multi-age group.
  • Collaborate weekly with the Beyond Camp team to design engaging, developmentally appropriate programming.
  • Ensure activities support campers’ social, emotional, and physical development.
  • Oversee daily setup and breakdown of transitional spaces.
  • Coordinate smooth transitions of campers to and from Discovery Day Camp and Adventure Day Camp staff.
  • Model and reinforce camp values, policies, and safety standards at all times.
  • Maintain a secure, organized, and welcoming program environment.

Camper Experience & Community

  • Create a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for all campers.
  • Build meaningful relationships with campers and families.
  • Encourage participation, independence, and respectful behavior.
  • Support effective behavior management aligned with Summer Experience expectations.
  • Foster a strong sense of belonging within a multi-age setting.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Experience working with children in a camp, school, childcare, or recreational setting preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a multi-age group with confidence and enthusiasm.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to plan and facilitate engaging, developmentally appropriate activities.

  • Current First Aid and CPR certification preferred (or willingness to obtain prior to the start of camp).

Schedule & Commitment Expectations

  • Positions are available for Before Care (7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.) and/or After Care (3:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.).
  • Staff may be assigned to one or both program blocks based on availability and program needs.
  • Employment is expected for the duration of the Summer Experience program, with preference given to candidates who can commit to multiple weeks.
  • Participation in required staff training prior to the start of camp is mandatory.
  • Punctuality and consistent attendance are essential to ensure safe camper supervision and program continuity.
