Job description

Job Description:

GENERAL PURPOSE:

BraunAbility is looking for an experienced Body Structure Engineer to develop the next generation of Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles. This role is central to our new vehicle development programs. This position is responsible for all aspects of development from early-stage concept work, all stages of development and product launch. If you are an automotive enthusiast with body structures engineering experience looking to truly make life a moving experience for others, consider this highly impactful job with BraunAbility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Design and develop body (floor) structures in CAD and support prototype builds.

  • Concept Generation and Mock-ups
  • All prototype, design verification and process verification builds.

Plan for design, procurement, assembly, and validation requirements and align them with overall project timing and deliverables (Stage Gate/APQP).

Ensure designs conform to quality and cost targets and suggest low cost alternatives.

Support design commonization efforts.

Collaborate in the design of body structure fixtures.

Lead design reviews and collaborate with cross-functional teams (Manufacturing, Quality, Sales, Portfolio) to ensure design accounts for all requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Vehicle body structures design, sheet metal fabrication, and welding processes including ARC and RSW.
  • Proficiency in metal forming and different joining methods including resistance spot welding.
  • Knowledge of materials and benefits of utilizing one type over the other.
    • Working knowledge of material used in current production vehicles.
    • Design requirements (and best practices) for selecting and joining materials
  • Understanding of vehicle systems, materials, and industry standards and their impact to the body structure.
  • Solid working knowledge of quality, design and validation tools including FEA, DFA/M, DOE, D/PFMEA, DVP&R, problem solving (8D or similar), GD&T and Tolerance Stack-up.
  • Understanding of FMVSS standards
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills needed
  • Organized and accurate with a strong attention to detail.
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced environment adhering to project milestones.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively analyze and solve problems
  • Prototype fabrication and welding knowledge preferred
  • Proficiency in CAD tools (Inventor), PLM (Teamcenter), and MS Office

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related engineering field.

5 years' work experience in automotive body structures design is preferred.

Previous assembly plant launch experience preferred.

Dimensional Management and understanding of GD&T preferred.

Experience with structural design, steel and aluminum parts and manufacturing required.
