What is a social performance?

A Social Performance job focuses on managing a company's social impact, ensuring ethical business practices, stakeholder engagement, and community development. Professionals in this role work to align corporate activities with social and environmental responsibilities, often within industries like energy, mining, or sustainability. Responsibilities may include stakeholder consultations, social risk assessments, and implementing corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The goal is to foster positive relationships between a company and the communities it affects while ensuring compliance with social and environmental regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in social performance, and why are they important?

To excel in a Social Performance role, you need expertise in social impact assessment, stakeholder engagement, and sustainability frameworks, often backed by a degree in social sciences or environmental studies. Familiarity with standards such as IFC Performance Standards, social impact assessment tools, and compliance management systems is typically required. These competencies ensure organizations meet social sustainability goals while maintaining positive relationships with key stakeholders.

What are some common challenges social performance professionals face in their daily work?

Social Performance professionals often navigate complex stakeholder dynamics, balancing organizational objectives with the diverse needs and expectations of communities and interest groups. They may encounter situations requiring conflict resolution or rapid response to emerging social risks on project sites. Adaptability is key, as priorities can shift quickly due to regulatory changes or stakeholder feedback. Working collaboratively with environmental, legal, and operational teams is essential to ensure that social risks are identified, managed, and communicated effectively throughout project lifecycles.
