What is an LGBTQ professional?

LGBTQ professionals are individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or other identities within the LGBTQ spectrum and work in various professions across different industries. They may face unique challenges in the workplace, such as discrimination or lack of inclusivity, but also contribute diverse perspectives and experiences. Many organizations now actively support LGBTQ inclusion through policies, employee resource groups, and diversity initiatives to create more welcoming and equitable environments.

What is an LGBTQ job?

An LGBTQ job is a position that specifically supports or advocates for the rights, inclusion, and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals. These jobs can be found in advocacy organizations, nonprofits, healthcare, education, corporate diversity departments, and government agencies. They often focus on policy development, community support, legal rights, mental health services, and workplace inclusion. Some roles may also involve event planning, training, or outreach to promote LGBTQ equality and awareness.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an LGBTQ+ advocate?

To thrive as an LGBTQ+ Advocate, you need a solid understanding of LGBTQ+ issues, advocacy best practices, and relevant laws, often supported by a degree in social work, psychology, or a related field. Familiarity with case management software, community resource databases, and legal research tools is typically required. Exceptional communication, cultural competence, and empathy are crucial soft skills for building trust and supporting diverse individuals. These skills and qualities are vital for effectively advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, providing support, and creating inclusive environments.

What are common challenges faced by LGBTQ+ advocates in the workplace, and how can they be addressed?

LGBTQ+ advocates in the workplace often encounter challenges such as navigating organizational resistance, ensuring inclusivity in policies, and fostering open dialogue among diverse teams. Success in this role involves building strong relationships across departments, educating colleagues about the importance of diversity, and staying updated on best practices for creating supportive environments. Collaborating with HR, leadership, and employee resource groups can help advocates implement effective initiatives and overcome barriers. Regular training sessions and open forums also contribute to lasting positive change.

Job description

About Lawrence Hall

Lawrence Hall is a Chicago-based nonprofit social services agency that provides therapeutic, wellness, and skill development services to youth, families, and neighborhoods affected by lasting trauma. We foster healing and growth through empowerment, respect, safety, and teamwork.

Avers Home is a Transitional Living Program (TLP) that provides queer youth ages 14-17 the support they need to transition into independent living after many have faced neglect or rejection from family members over their identities.

About the Role

Be a champion for safe, affirming care. As the LGBTQ Site Coordinator, you'll lead the Transitional Living Program at our Avers Home – the first foster care home for LGBTQ+ youth in the state of Illinois - helping them build independent living skills and access trauma-informed support. In this highly relational role, you'll supervise a team, set the tone for a youth-guided environment, and collaborate across disciplines to support each resident's success.

In this role, you will:

  • Supervise and mentor site staff and the LGBTQ Case Manager to create a trauma-informed, youth-centered space
  • Coordinate daily living routines, recreational activities, and life skills development for residents
  • Lead efforts to uphold affirming care policies and LGBTQ+ best practices
  • Ensure program compliance and quality through documentation review and staff training
  • Support resident transitions to independent living by fostering personal growth and community connections
  • Maintain strong community relationships and represent the program publicly as needed

  • Master's degree in a human services field
  • Minimum 3 years of post-degree supervisory experience
  • Experience working directly with LGBTQ+ youth as an ally or with lived experience
  • Valid Illinois driver's license, safe driving record, and access to a personal vehicle
  • Ability to pass all background and drug screenings
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, SharePoint, Word, Excel)
  • We expect team players who work well with others, build positive relationships, and contribute to a respectful, collaborative environment
  • Must obtain Child Welfare Employee Licensure upon hire and complete required trainings (CERAP, CANS, and Teen Parenting Service Network)

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of trauma, youth development, and strength-based approaches

Work Schedule & Additional Information

  • This position is primarily located on-site at the Lakewood LGBTQ Site.
  • Requires travel between multiple sites using a personal vehicle.
  • Regular use of agency vehicles to transport youth; must maintain a valid driver's license and safe driving record.
  • Schedule includes a mix of daytime, evening, and weekend hours based on program needs. On-call availability required 24/7.
  • Physical demands include walking multiple flights of stairs, lifting up to 25 pounds, and long periods of mobility throughout multi-level sites during an 8-hour shift
  • Must obtain Child Welfare Employee Licensure upon hire or at next available Foundation training, including successful completion of CERAP and CANS.
  • Complete Teen Parenting Service Network Specialty Training within one year.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must complete and maintain TCI (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention) and physical intervention certification every 6 months

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary: $62,00 - $67,000/year, based on experience
  • 17-25 days PTO + 9 paid holidays
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
