DoD SkillBridge Heavy Equipment Service Technician/Mechanic Position Purpose
Provides transitioning service members with supervised, hands-on training in the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of heavy construction and industrial equipment. The intern develops civilian-recognized technical skills while learning Kirby-Smith shop operations, safety standards, and customer service practices.
DoD SkillBridge Heavy Equipment Service Technician/Mechanic Essential Function
  • Communicates and supports the Kirby Smith vision and core values of One Mission, One Team, One Plan, One Goal
  • Performs diagnostic testing, troubleshooting, and repair on diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and powertrains under technician supervision
  • Completes preventive maintenance inspections and scheduled service work on heavy equipment
  • Reads and interprets technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer service bulletins
  • Uses diagnostic software and specialized tools to identify equipment issues
  • Documents work performed, parts used, and labor hours in the shop management system
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with company and applicable safety standards
  • Communicates professionally with technicians, service managers, and customers regarding equipment status and repairs
  • Participates in on-the-job training and shadows experienced technicians across equipment specialties
  • Consistent and reliable on-site attendance
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

DoD SkillBridge Heavy Equipment Service Technician/Mechanic Minimum Qualifications
  • Active-duty service member approved for participation in the DoD SkillBridge Program with 180 days or fewer remaining before separation
  • Military experience in a mechanical, technical, or maintenance-related field preferred, such as wheeled or tracked vehicle maintenance, power generation equipment repair, or a similar military occupational specialty or rating
  • Basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems
  • Ability to read technical manuals and follow detailed repair procedures
  • Willingness and ability to learn manufacturer-specific diagnostic tools and software
  • Valid driver's license required; commercial driver's license preferred but not required
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks in a shop environment, including bending, kneeling, and working in confined spaces
  • Strong work ethic, commitment to safety, and professional communication skills

DoD SkillBridge Heavy Equipment Service Technician/Mechanic Physical Requirements
  • Pushing/Pulling/Lifting/Carrying up to 100 pounds without assistance
  • Physical ability to squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, climb, and reach overhead
  • Must be able to work in extreme heat or cold and wet, damp, dusty, or windy conditions and tolerate exposure to typical noises, hazardous materials, and fumes/odors associated with the shop
  • Physical ability to perform maintenance on equipment for extended hours with continual mounting and dismounting throughout the workday
  • Ability to adhere to personal protective equipment (PPE) policy and maintain individual PPE in a functional condition
